Major Muriel Irene Newbury was born on the 11/11/1914 in Ilford, her father Percy Cecil Newbury served in France with the Royal Garrison Artillery. She trained at the University College Hospital London 1932 -1934, and was a registered Nurse 15/3/1935. Miss Newbury enlisted with the Queen Alexandras Imperial Military Nursing Service in 1937 as a provisional Staff Nurse (206353). Granted a commission with the rank of Sister 30/5/1941, Senior Sister to Junior Commander 1/2/1949, Senior Commander 1/9/49, Major with seniority 1/8/1949. She saw service in Burma in WW2 and the roll of practising Midwife 1954/55 records her as stationed at Military Hospital Bovington. Major Newbury was made a Member of the Royal Red Cross 1st Class on the New Years Honours list 1/1/1957 and the medal was presented to her in Bermuda by the Governor 15/7/1957, she retired as a Major in 1964 on reaching the compulsory retirement age and died in London on the 18/2/1968. A very interesting WW2 Royal Naval Reserve LSGC medal group to Petty Officer Jack Phillips. Comes with some copied research. He was in the light Cruiser HMS Sirius during Operation Husky (Sicily Landings) in 1943. Onboard HMS Newfoundland when she was torpedoed by either Italian Submarine Ascianghi or U-407 on 27th March, 1943. She limped back to to Malta missing her rudder with one killed and 15 wounded. His father was working and living there and subsequently Jack was bordered and educated at Peter Symonds School at Winchester, followed by the Imperial College, London University (1934) gaining his B. He undertook further research in statistics gaining a diploma and published a paper Levy and Gascoigne (1936). He joined the Royal Navy as Instructor Lieutenant in 1935, serving on the H. Norfolk serving in the Med. On the outbreak of the war, he was serving on H. S Revenge (Revenge-class super-dreadnought battleships) but after 41 served on H. S Kent (County class heavy cruiser) promoted to Lt Commander 1941 and mentioned in dispatches in 1942, The Kent spent most of the war escorting convoys to and from North Russia and in 43 was unsuccessfully attacked by the U 625 when escorting convoy JW 52. He was awarded his O. Post war he served on the aircraft carriers H. S Implacable and Indomitable being promoted to Commander 1948. He served in a variety of shore posting including Principal Lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department Royal Navy College, Greenwich. He retired from the Navy in 1961 after serving some 26 years. Whilst aboard Blanche, he received his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on the 4th June 1916. BARNHAMS WARTIME SERVICE AT THE. In an attempt to lure out and destroy a portion of the Grand Fleet, the High Seas Fleet, composed of 16 dreadnoughts, 6 pre dreadnoughts, 6 light cruisers, and 31 torpeado boats, departed the Jade early on the morning of 31 May. The fleet sailed in concert with Rear Admiral Von Hippers five battlecruisers and supporting cruisers and torpedo boats. The Royal Navy’s Room 40 had intercepted and decrypted German radio traffic containing plans of the operation. In response the Admiralty ordered the Grand Fleet, totalling some 28 dreadnoughts and 9 battlecruisers, to sortie the night before to cut off and destroy the High Seas Fleet. Barham slipped her mooring at 22:08 and was followed by the rest of Beatty’s ships. When dawn broke Beatty ordered his forces into cruising formation with the 5th Battle Squadron trailing his battle cruisers by five nautical miles (9.3 km; 5.8 mi). At 14:15, Beatty ordered a turn North by East to rendezvous with the Grand Fleet. Shortly before the turn, one of his escorting light cruisers, Galatea spotted smoke on the horizon and continued on her course to investigate. Hipper’s battlecruisers spotted the Battlecruiser Fleet to their west at 15:20, but Beatty’s ships did not see the Germans to their east until 15:30. Two minutes later, Beatty ordered a course change to east-southeast, positioning the British ships to cut off the German’s line of retreat, and signalled action stations. Hipper ordered his ships to turn to starboard, away from the British, to assume a south-easterly course, and reduced speed to 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph) to allow three light cruisers of the 2nd Scouting Group to catch up. With this turn, Hipper was falling back on the High Seas Fleet, 60 miles (97 km) behind him. Beatty then altered course to the east, as he was still too far north to cut Hipper off. By this time the 5th Battle Squadron was about seven point five nautical miles (13.9 km; 8.6 mi) northwest of Beatty. The Germans opened fire first at 15:48, followed by the British battlecruisers. The light cruisers of the 2nd Scouting Group were the first German ships visible to Evan-Thomas’s ships and Barham opened fire on them at 15:58 until the cruisers disappeared into their own smoke screen at around 16:05. Three minutes later, she sighted the topmasts of Vice-Admiral Scheers battleships, but did not report this for another five minutes. Beatty continued south for another two minutes to confirm the sighting before ordering his force to turn north, towards the Grand Fleet in what came to be known as the “Run to the North”.
