Very Interesting little grouping, this grouping was acquired from a fellow collector a few years back. He had acquired directly from the veterans family not long prior but had not been able to source the name or any other material from the estate. He had some information but I can’t seem to find where I saved or recorded it. The only part I remember was that the grouping had belonged to a navy commander who served during WW2 and possibly the Korean War. Past that I can’t recall anything. I think he might have retired as a captain but can’t confirm this! Keep that in mind when considering the price! Please check out my other militaria and collectible offerings!

I found this RARE 3-combat-jumps set of paratrooper wings pinned inside the case of this medal, many years ago early 1990s? I assume this US Army paratrooper jumped into Sicily, Normandy and Holland (“a bridge too far”), but that’s just a guess. I don’t need to point out that the accompanying item shows that he was injured in action. Nice fairly early example of this medal, given the engraved number. If you catch my drift. A very interesting & hard to find MiD group of 5 to Gilbert Conyard of the 2/3 Bn who was captured sometime in April during the evacuation of Greece. He was also Mentioned in Despatches for Gallant & Distinguished services in the Mediterranean (a rare theatre for MiD’s). Stars are unnamed Defence, War with MiD emblem & ASM correctly impressed to NX11413 G L CONYARD with box & early issue slip plus both compliment cards from army. Also a Greek war medal unnamed. Sadly Gilbert never lived to receive his medals & probably didn’t even know he was MiD, as he committed suicide in 1950 by Gassing himself in his kitchen. Doing a quick Google search produces many results for Gilbert including a remarkable story that he fathered a daughter while a POW in Austria! According to the story he was not too happy to return to Australia & apparently tried unsuccessfully to bring his daughter & family to Australia, this & the fact he was married may have been the reason for his suicide? I will list some links below. The item “WW2 Medal group to POW captured Greece & Mid Greece. 2/3 Bn Interesting story” is in sale since Tuesday, November 22, 2016. This item is in the category “Collectables\Militaria\1939 – 1945 (WWII)”. The seller is “deleboe” and is located in Richmond-Tweed, New South Wales. This item can be shipped worldwide.
