Breaking up a big collection that took many years to find. WW1 bronze death plaque in memory of. 41771 Pte Richard Alexander Clark 8th (Service) Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment was. KILLED IN ACTION on 27 May 1918. Richard was born at Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, on 25 Jan 1899 to Annie Clark. He first enlisted in the 2/1st Yorkshire Hussars on 11 Nov 1916. His address was 13 Goxhill Street, Baslingthorpe Lane, Leeds. And he was a’leather worker’. He was later given a compulsory transfer to the 8th Leicestershire Regiment. The War Diary shows that they took over positions to the East of the Aisne – Marne Canal on 20 May 1918. During the time they were there the Allies faced an overwhelming German attack. Despite fierce fighting that lasted for several days they were forced back with losses of 15000 fatalities. Body must have been lost but he is remembered with honour at the Soissons Memorial – where 4000 officers and men killed nearby have no known graves. For his service in France his family would also have received the British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal (not included in the listing) – a great opportunity to reunite with the medals if you have them. Also comes with a copy of the King’s letter of condolence that would have accompanied the plaque and copies of research. Please feel free to ask questions and request further images.
