Offered is an interesting campaign medal group to Sergeant Robert George Fletcher, who saw action in the Boer War and both World Wars, whilst serving in the Middlesex Regiment, Royal Flying Crops, Royal Air Force & The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) Defence Battalion. Spanning the reign of 4 British monarchs. Queens South Africa Medal 1899 1902, with 1 clasp CAPE COLONY, impressed named 1168 C. Kings South Africa Medal 1902, with 1 clasp, impressed named 1168 COR. 1914 15 Star, impressed named 2965 SJTR. British War and Victory Medals, impressed named 405229 SGT. British War medal 1939 -45 unnamed as issued. Comes with copies service record, medal rolls, R. List, WW2 list – Defence Battalion, newspaper article and paper packets for Great War awards, together with O. Box for last addressed to’Mr R. Fletcher, 130 Gorringe Av. Sergeant Robert George Fletcher was born in 1880 at Isleworth, Middlesex, he was working as a horse keeper when he attested with the 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, 30/12/1899. He served in the Boer War with the 6th Battalion and is reported as a Lance Corporal dangerously ill 12/12/1900. The 1911 census records him working as a milk carrier in Isleworth. On the 9/11/1914 he re-enlisted with his old Regiment, likely being allotted to the 2/10. (This was the only Middlesex Battalion to serve Gallipoli) and was given the new service number 2965. He deployed as a Sergeant with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 18/7/1915, and would have served Gallipoli August December. He transferred to the R. C (possibly 17/8/1917) with the new service number 405229 ending the war with the Royal Air Force. Shortly before the outbreak of WW2 he enlisted into the Queens R. S Defence Battalion 16/5/1939 with a new service number 8313, however he was discharged 3/1/1940 under Kings Regulations Paragraph 390 (xviii)(a) – His Service No Longer Required (SNLR) for the purpose for which he was enlisted. WW1 and WW2 medal group to Lieutenant De Pinto, 9th Battalion West Riding Regiment and Tunnelling Officer who was mentioned in despatches 1916. He suffered from shell shock as a result of being entombed for 20 hours and being blown up twice previously. He was probably involved in the tunnelling for the Battle of Messines. Between the wars he was married to British socialite & novelist Flavia Forbes. He served with the Royal Artillery during WW2 in France & Germany. 1914 – 15 Star, impressed named LIEUT. British War & Victory Medals, impressed named LIEUT. DE PINTO with M. D oak leaf; France & Germany Star; Defence & War Medal s 1939-45. WW2 medals unnamed as issued. Original period swing set as worn. Comes with copies of WW1 enlistment application, M. C, medal roll, medical records shell shock, London Gazettes, seniority lists, newspaper articles & census. Lionel Herbert de Pinto. Was born on the 14/9/1893 in London. His father was a British subject, whose occupation being merchant, his mother was an American national. He was educated at Clifton College and on completing his schooling was working as a railway engineer. At the outbreak of the war he applied for a commission on the 11/8/1914 listing his prior service with the Officer training Corps whilst at Clifton College. His height was recorded as 5 2 3/4 tall. The minimum height at the time was 53. He was commissioned as a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant with the 9th Service Bn The Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment with seniority 25/9/1914. Seconded to RE post March 1915. E back to his former regiment. Demobilised 9/4/1919 & resigned Commission 1/9/1921. He landed in France on the 15/7/1915 with the 9th Bn and within the week was in the trenches at Ypres. He was awarded a Mentioned in Despatches 1/1/1916 which would have been one of the first decorations awarded to the Bn considering that they had only deployed 4 months previously. The battalion war diary records constant frontline activity from 1st landing in France. He was seconded to the Royal Engineers Tunnelling Company probably due to his Engineering degree. (The tunnelling Companies were first formed in February 1915). September 1917 Lens Area shell shock, entombed for 20 hours in a tunnel following German counter mining. He had been blown up twice previously. Evacuated to England and transferred to the 3rd Bn D. Last medical board 30/9/1918 & instructed to re-join unit. Between the wars he moved to and from America with his occupation recorded as Engineer. He appears in several newspaper articles due to small court matters regarding unpaid licences etc and bankruptcy in 1936. A failed marriage to British socialite & novelist Flavia Forbes 1933-38 (infidelity on her part). Forbes was known as a forces sweetheart for organizing soldiers’ canteens in France during the First World War. The newspapers reported him as a Lt Colonel however it should read Lieutenant. WW2 Service included 1939 census shows him living at Harsford Cottages Petworth Sussex occupation Lt R. 1939 Emergency commission RA Staff Captain Shoreham Sub Area. An original World War 1 Military Medal (MM), with length of original ribbon, named correctly to; 3-8803 Sjt: J. Was born at Burton-in-Kendall, Westmorland, on 17 August 1874, and enlisted into the Scots Guards in December 1894. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa and received the Queens medal with 5 clasps. After completing his 7 years with the Colours and 5 years in the reserve, he joined the 3rd Battalion West Riding Regiment as a territorial on 2 August 1907. He was mobilised in August 1914 and posted to the 2nd Battalion which he joined in France on 8 September 1914. He was wounded in November 1914, and again in March and September 1915. He was discharged sick and wounded on 28 September 1916, was awarded the Silver War Badge No. 780 and is entitled to the 1914 Star with clasp, British War and Victory Medals, and the Meritorious Service Medal M. Vintage WW1 era large framed picture of 28719 Gunner George Washington Turnbull, 5th Brigade, Australian Field Artillery, who was Killed in Action around Ypres on the 18th of August 1917. The picture consists of a central oval with coloured photo of Turnbull and cards showing his name and him being a life member of the West Australian Amateur Sports Club (incorporated). This is set in a glass fronted wooden frame. The frame shows some age wear as shown with a drill hole to base (more than likely a removed brass plate) and shows water staining to reverse. Frame measures 75cm x 100cm. Comes with a small number of copied service papers showing KIA details, grave details etc. Rare to see one of these period pictures have survived. This was hung in a local antique dealers shop for decades, so many WA customers will more than likely recognise this picture. We list militaria and coins weekly. Of all the British regiments which served in Burma, none surely can equal the record of the West Yorkshires. Their fifteen Battle Honours are only exceeded by the nineteen of the 10th Gurkha Rifles (which fielded three battalions in the campaign), and the Honour Burma 1942-45, the dates covering all four years of the War, is shared only with the Royal Berkshires, 7th Gurkhas and 10th Gurkhas.
