Original Gallipoli War Medal WW1 Ottoman Turkey Turkish (The Iron Crescent) Star Badge. The Gallipolli Star is a military decoration awarded by the Ottoman Empire. This decoration was awarded for the duration of World War I to Ottoman and other Central Power troops, primarily in Ottoman areas of engagement. It was known as the Ottoman War Medal, or the Iron Crescent. It was instituted by Sultan Mehmed V on 1 March 1915 for gallantry in battle. Marked BB & Co on the reverse. Measures approx 57mm across from ball finials and has a red enamel infill. The silver coloured metal is tarnished and but the enamel are complete and great condition. Please see photos more details. 800 silver Iron Cross first class pin medal badge Imperial WW1 German 1914 award. Here is your chance to own a lovely Gallipoli star with a vertical pin. The vertical reverse setup, in my experience, is much harder to find than the horizontal counterpart. I believe I see a maker mark to the right of the pin but it is foreign and I don’t recognize it. Some minor chips in the enamel as can be seen in the photos but nothing major whatsoever. Tombak construction and slightly vaulted. Would be perfect for a tunic display. An original WW1 Turkish Halbmond Cross (Gallipoli Star) awarded to German soldiers who served with the Turks during World War 1. Created in 1915 and awarded for Military Merit – an entry level galantry medal. The medal is approximately 56mm accross, with balls finials, raised silver wash surround (some wear & tear to this) with red enamel infill. It has a raised crescent, open at the top which encirlces the centre of the badge. Inside the centre of the badge is the tughra of Sultan Mehmed Reshad V over the date “1313″ (1915). The cross is in excellent condition with all the enamel complete no chips etc. All items are sent with a certificate of posting. This covers both parties up to GBP 20.00. With intack pin Marker marked B. During WWI, British and Commonwealth Forces called this The Gallipoli Star. The Germans and Austrians called it the Der Eisner Halbmond (The Iron Crescent). When the Sultan Mehmed V created this decoration in March 1915, he named it simply the Harp Madalysi (War Medal). Its likely that this decoration was inspired by the Iron Cross, awarded by the Ottoman Empires German Allies. Like the Iron Cross First Class, It was worn on the breast pocket. Unlike the Iron Cross, it had only one class. By the Sultans decree, it was bestowed upon those persons who show gallantry and sacrifice, without differentiating any rank and position/title. These persons can be either nationals of the Sublime Ottoman State or allied forces and navies and voluntary nursing units and public servants and employees within the armies and navies. At the center is the Sultans Tughra a sort of royal cypher and below it the Islamic year 1333 (1915). In April of 1915 The Allies launched an invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula. By the time it was over in January 1916, both sides had suffered heavily; Over 141,000 Allied casualties and 251,000 Turks. It was during this period that the decoration became associated with Gallipoli. Actually, it could be awarded for actions occurring from the start of the war, and continued to be awarded until the end of the war. These were highly sought after by Australian and New Zealand troops in the middle east generally taken from POW or the dead as souvenirs. Becoming hard to find these days in this condition. WW1 Turkish War Medal

The Medal is 57 mm accross the points and it weighs 28.8 grams and is definitely a genuine medal. The Turkish War Medal of 1915. This medal is referred to by a number of informal names. Commonwealth nations often call it the “Gallipoli Star” even though it was not a campaign medal specifically for that battle. Another informal name is the “Iron Crescent, ” as it functioned similarly to Prussia’s Iron Cross. The medal was given from 1915 until the end of the war, for acts of bravery or merit in action. Recipients of the Imtiaz and Liyakat medal were automatically eligible for this medal. The medal is a star-shaped pin back badge. Of white metal (not iron), with a raised crescent around the bottom center, and the “Toughra” or monogram of the Sultan in the center. The flat surfaces of the badge were finished in a thin opaque red enamel. The War Medal was worn pinned to the tunic in a manner similar to the Iron Cross, and not suspended from a ribbon. There was a ribbon (red with white side stripes) which was worn in the second button hole (like the Iron Cross 2nd Class) when the star itself was not worn. Because the medal was frequently awarded to German and Austrian personnel who served with the Turkish forces during WW1, many unofficial variants were made in Germany and elsewhere, of varying quality, but usually of higher quality than the originals. This difference in quality had led some early authors to speculate that there were two classes of the War Medal — poor quality copies for enlisted men, nicer copies for officers. Rare Romanian medal bar, encompassing service as Medical Personnel from the Turkish War of 1877 though World War 1, and service both in war and as a civilian. All ribbons are original and show soiling and wear. All of the medals show heavy tarnish and contact marks as well darkening where the enamel meets the metal borders. (1) Order of the Star of Romania, knight with crossed swords; heavy soiling to ribbon. The medal is missing the blue enamel from the circle around the eagle as well as from the tip on the end of the cross. (2) Order of the Crown of Romania, knight with crossed swords; the ribbon shows frays and breaks. There is white enamel missing from the circle around the crown on the face and the the reverse. (3) Order of the Crown of Romania, knight; There are some cracks in the white enamel of the cross border, and the ENTIRE CENTRAL DISK IS MISSING FROM THE REVERSE Visible in the overall photo and in the close up.
