World War Two Casualty Medal Group to 2346926 Private Driver S. Blakeman of the 11th Indian Division Signals of the Royal Corps of Signals who died on 11th March 1945 aged 32 as a Japanese Prisoner of War and whom would have been involved in the construction of the Siam – Burma Railway – the Railway of Death. Private Sidney Blakeman came from Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Casualty Medal Slip confirming name and the award of 4 medal. Original medal box sent to Mrs Lacheny (Roy’s wife Edith Blackman remarried a Walter C Lacheny in 1947), 9 Salisbury Crescent, Newbold, Chesterfield. Sidney Blackman was taken as a Japanese Prisoner of War at the fall of Singapore on 14th February 1942 and would have been involved in the construction of the Siam – Burma railway. He remained as a prisoner of war until he died in captivity in March 1945. The cause of death was beri-beri and ulcer of dorsum of right foot – please see documents above.
