WW1 mercantile & other medals, badges, certificate, photos, ephemera & more – Ost family. This is a collection of mainly military items belonging to a father & son which covers WW1 & WW2 although most of the items belong to the father. Although I have not researched the family, I have discovered the following information from the contents of this collection: Alfred James OST was born in 1871 on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. He qualified as a master mariner and spent his working life on the sea. He died in 1944 and was buried at sea on the request of his son – letter describing the burial is included. This is a list of all the items included in this sale. Most of them were Alfred’s, some were his son’s Alfred Arthur Ost – who appeared to call himself Arthur. The photos and ephemera involve both of them and the wider family. A small attache case (catch missing) which contains:A union flag with’British Made’ printed in one corner – loose threads, some tears, some holes quite dirty. A mercantile marine medal & war medal both stamped’Alfred J. Ost together with related paperwork. WW2 defence and war medals in box with paperwork for A. WW1 period wristwatch with no strap or winder. A Hudson’s patent whistle’The Thunderer’ – very well worn with hardly any original silver finish on the surface. Top and bottom sections of a cardboard box for an’Iver Johnson’ revolver handgun. The original’Certificate of Competence as Master’ to Alfred James Ost dated 1904 printed on fabric both sides. A’John Bull self filling safety’ pen with 14 ct gold nib – crack around part of the lid. A blue & white enamel badge’On War Service 1915′ with’6049′ and’Gaunt, London’ stamped on back. A sheet of 12 unused large gilt brass buttons and a sheet of 12 unused small gilt brass buttons all identical with’Bullard King & Co’ round the edge and a pennant in the centre with’BK&Co. A padded fabric cap badge with gold braid leaves surrounding a pennant with’BK & Co’ in the centre. Original label on the back’Harvey’s Suit 17, London Street EC. A pair of unused arm bands with four bars of gold thread. RAF cap badge with one lug missing on back, Royal Artillery sweetheart brooch with blue enamel & a full size R. Cap badge with slider. Alfed James Ost’s marriage certificate dated 1910. An envelope containing photo negatives (appear to be family orientated) and about 50 photographs including Alfred James as a boy, at least one during his career and many of him and his family during retirement. An autograph book with’Arthur Alfred Ost’ on the inside cover – contains a couple of good sketches. A quanity of ephemera which appears to be relating to wills, bequests etc. There is a letter from Alfred which he wrote (or typed) on VE day from Barton Stacey camp in which he explains why leave is cancelled (amongst other things). All the items fit inside the case which is 11.25″ wide, 7.75″ deep and just under 3 high (285mm x 195mm x 72mm). Please be aware that although this is a smoke free home, some of these items have a musty or stale smoke smell. Super rare original WW2 US Merchant Mariner’s warped brooch medal with ribbon. Total awarded was 6. 635 so few are around. Fourteen other assorted original WW2 U. Medals – Pins – Ribbon Bar – Insignias etc. See photos for overall condition. Some missing their back pin piece. The Merchant Marine Mariner’s Medal is a decoration of the United States Merchant Marine. Because the Merchant Marine was not considered a branch of the U. Armed Forces, the Purple Heart was not available to Merchant Mariners; as such, the Mariner’s Medal was established by an Act of Congress on 10 May 1943 to solve this dilemma. In the event any such seaman dies from the wounds or injuries before the award can be made to him, the medal may be presented to the person named in the War Risk Policy as his beneficiary. 6,635 Mariner’s Medals were awarded for service in the Second World War; all further awards of the Mariner’s Medal were suspended on 30 June 1956 and has not been awarded in subsequent U.
