Full size medals with original ribbons and suspension bar are. Africa Star with 8th Army bar on ribbon. Miniature medals with original ribbons and suspension bar are. Africa Star with North Africa 1942-43 bar on ribbon. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Decoration medal? Hallmarked silver Territorial Force Nursing Tippet Badge. Hallmarked to the rear with what I believe to be the maker’s name RJ. Town mark for London. The letter t for the year 1934. Suspension bar marked to rear Sterling. Measures total length with ribbon 8cm. Medal itself measures in length 4cm. Widest part approximately 2.8cm. All in very good condition. Please see all 24 photos. Serving on home front WW1, fighting “Spanish Flu” pandemic. Awarded The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, M. (Civil) Members 2nd type badge, silver; Jubilee 1935, Coronation 1937, unnamed as issued; Voluntary Medical Services Medal, with two Additional Geneva Cross Award Bars official impressed name Miss Mildred F. Hughes mounted as worn; together with British Red Cross Society State Registered Nurse Badge, gilt and enamel, IMO extremely fine, see pictures for condition Evelina Hospital for Children Born abt 1890 Torrington, Devon, parents Fred Charles Hughes (a Baptist Minister census 1891) and Henrietta Florence Hughes (Terrell). She trained at the Evelian Hospital for Children (1911 census, Hospital nurse Probationer), & WW1 1914-17 Guys Hospital, London, where she subsequently held several residential posts. She would have been a young nurse during WW1 engaged in home front service and probably helped fight the “Spanish Flu” pandemic that raged during 1918-20. She was later in 1917 at the Infants’ Hospital, Vincent Square, Westminster, London becoming Matron in 1928. She joined the Territorial Army Nursing Service in 1929 and served during WW2 as Principle Matron 5th Northern General Hospital (Leicester). She is Certified as a midwife and holds the Diploma in Nursing of London University. She was President of the Leicester Royal Infirmary Nurses League and President, Royal College of Nursing 1944-46 (Copy extract from British Journal of nursing July 1945 with her picture supplied). Awarded MBE post war for her service to nursing, she died in Leicester in 1972, aged 82. WW1 George v Royal Red Cross A. Presented to Mrs Kate Watson. In Original Garrard Presentation Case with Original War Office Letter. The award was established on 23 April 1883 by Queen Victoria, with a single class of Member and first awarded to the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. A second and lower class, Associate, was added during World War I in November 1915. It is conferred on members of the nursing services regardless of rank. The badge for ARRC is in the shape of a silver cross, 1.375 inches (3.49 cm) wide, the obverse enamelled red, with broad silver edges around the enamel; a circular medallion bearing an effigy of the reigning monarch at its centre. The reverse has a circular medallion bearing the royal cypher of the reigning monarch, with the words “Faith”, “Hope” and “Charity” inscribed on the upper three limbs of the cross, with the year “1883″ in the lower limb. Good Quality and Mounted as originally worn. Royal Red Cross GVI 2nd Class (Associate) (Silver). 1939/45 Star, Burma Star, Defence and War Medals (Silver). General Service Medal GVI clasp Malaya (Silver). With copy ARRC recommendation, London Gazette entry and headers and research listed here extracted from The Army List and on line records. Miss Webster commenced her Registered Nurse training at Dundee Royal Infirmary 2nd April 1924 she recorded her home address then as 99 Edward Street, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Qualifying in 1927 she was appointed Nursing Sister in the then QAIMNS 26th November 1928. Serving in India and Burma during the Second World War she was awarded the Royal Red Cross 2nd Class London Gazette 19th October 1944 In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Burma and the Eastern Frontier of India. The official recommendation dated 14th October 1943 states. Acting Matron Miss Beatrice Mary Webster QAIMNS, British Military Hospital GAYA, North East India. For her work as Matron In Charge of the Hospital at GAYA. Throughout the past ten months, through periods of difficulty, heat, dust and overcrowding, she has successfully administered the Nursing Services of this Hospital, so that a most satisfactory standard has been achieved and maintained. Post War Miss Webster served in Malaya and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel 7th January 1952. She retired 19th October 1954 and died in Petersfield in 1983, she never married.
