With the 80th anniversary of the sinking coming up soon, this is a chance to own the Historically Important medal group awarded to The Captain of the Blue Star Line SS Arandora Star which was sunk by German U-boat U-47 Captained by Ace Gunther Prien. The medals are as follows :- Posthumous Lloyd’s Medal For Bravery at Sea named CAPTAIN. SS ARANDORA STAR 2nd JULY 1940. He was also awarded the Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct at the same time {This is absent}. WW1 Officer Pair named LIEUT. M {Lieutenant Royal Indian Marines} and Mercantile Marine named EDGAR. A Poland Polish Cross of Valour {awarded to Officers for the Withdrawal of Polish Troops from France 1940}, Atlantic Star, 1939-45 Star and a War Medal. SELFE on the Pair. Her medal card states PRISCILLA JANE MOULTON nee SELFE. The SS ARANDORA STAR was carrying 1673 people including Crew, British Military Guards German and Italian Prisoners of War and civilian Internees. She was sunk 02/07/1940 with a loss of 826 including Captain Edgar Moulton. He was Posthumously awarded the Lloyds War Medal For Bravery at sea and a German Merchant Navy Prisoner was also Posthumously cited for Heroism. ORIGINAL WW1 TRIO AND SILVER Q. STAFF NURSE DAISY THOMAS. SERVED AT CUMBALLA WAR HOSPITAL, BOMBAY, INDIA. Consisting of 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory medal. Mounted on Original pin backed ribbon bar. All correctly named to’ S. THOMAS’ (See Photographs) As well as a Silver hallmarked, Birmingham 1916 Q. Medal or cape badge, mounted seperatly on its own pin backed bar. Staff Nurse Daisy Thomas. Born: February 13th 1887 in Bishopston, Bristol. She was educated at St. Pauls School & Fairfield Road Higher Grade School Bristol (Built 1898). She trained as a nurse at Eastville Infirmary from April 29th. 1909 to June 14th 1912. She spent 3 years as a probationer and 2 years as a charge nurse. Before starting at The Hospital Newton Abbot, South Devon, on June 16th 1912. Nurse Thomas offered her services as a candidate for appointment with QAIMNSR on the 31st of December 1914 and. Enlisted for service with Queen Marys Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve. On 23rd of February 1915. Her address is given as The Hospital Newton Abbot. She served in India at The Cumballa War Hospital, Bombay, returning for three months leave to England in October 1916. While waiting for a return posting to India she worked at the Beaufort War Hospital from the 26th January 1917, in her native Bristol. On the 8th of August 1918 she was back in India until her contract expired on 22nd of February 1919. The Photo’s speak volumes and what you see is what you get. ORIGINAL WW1 1914/1915 STAR TRIO TO STAFF NURSE M. Also included in the sale. Photocopy’s of MIC and 13 pages of documents Service Record, death certificate, etc. Margaret Ann Blakelock was born in Pickering Yorskshire on 14th December 1881 the daughter of James Burgate, Master Cordwainer. Trained at Sir Vale Hospital from 1903 to 1906 left 1907 with the position of Staff Nurse. Later employed Toxteth Park Institution, Liverpool on the Surgical and Medical wards as a Theater Sister. She was working at The Institution Hospital Stratton St. Margaret, Swindon, Wiltshire at the time of signing up for service with Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve on 19/11/1915. Britannic struck a mine and sunk in just 55 minutes with the loss of 30 lives on 21/11/16. Mong her records is a request to marry Sergeant Thomas Ward 1st Division Australian Imperial Force while she was at No. 5 Reading War Hospital dated 18/3/16. Returning to Salonika in April 1917. Nurse Blakelock served with the 4th Canadian General Hospital as well as the 28th General Hospital while serving with the latter unit she contracted dysentery and was discharged unfit for duty on 11/9/17. She remained in Salonika and obviously recovered enough to return to duty with the 28th General Hospital in June 1918 on the 12/3/19 she departed Salonika for the UK via Taranto. Later she was demobilised on 20/3/19 her conduct was stated as Good and it also states This Staff Nurse has carried out a rather arduous duty extremely well, as regards Nursing and is suitable for promotion. The Dispersal certificate states her permanent address as Brooke Square, Connisborough, Yorkshire. Margaret Blakelock died on 1/8/1970 aged 88 in a nursing home in Thurston, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk and is buried in the churchyard of St. It would appear that she never married. ORIGINAL WW1 1914/1915 STAR AND BRITISH WAR MEDAL TO. VOLUNTARY AID DETACHMENT NURSE HENRIETTA EDITH DAVIES. Henrietta Edith Davies daughter of Humphrey (Professor of Languages) and Emma Ida Davies. Born 1886 in France. Baptised 24 November 1887 in Whalley Lancashire. According to the 1901 Census Henrietta was 15 and living with her uncle (a Surgeon) and aunt at 91 Preston New Road, Blackburn, Lancashire. This was her address when she joined the V. As a nurse aged 30 on 11/09/15 She served at the Military General Hospital Egypt, until she was demobilised on the 7/03/19. Her Medal entitlement is confirmed. She was also awarded the Victory medal, this sadly missing. MIC is available from the National Archives WO 372/23/10571. I found the above information using the website scarletfinders. Co. Uk.
