An original World War Two medal grouping comprising the 1939/45 Star, Pacific Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and 1939/45 War Medal. World War Two medals unnamed as issued. Correctly named to; Chf. Finally, the Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal correctly named to 1371685 Cpl. Court mounted for display. His service number denotes he enlisted in August 1940 in Edinburgh. Note the impossible combination of Pacific and Burma Stars. I understand from the vendor that whilst the Pacific Star is Russell’s the Burma Star is a representation added to the group for the display and whilst being original, was not issued to him. Medals are in mint condition with original ribbons. Information updated – he actually died 1926. Please check the pictures. Henry Hull Cosgrove (1876 8-Aug-1926). Captain, Royal Irish Fusiliers. Henry was born 1876 as a son of Henry Cosgrove and Sophia Margaret Cosgrove from Belfast. Their family were Presbyterian. Around 1900 they lived Rugby Road, Belfast and later on Craigwelyn Ballyholme Road, Bangor. Henry was a factory manager in Daisy Hill, Banbridge, Co. Down By the way? Commissioned from Officer Training Corps 15-jun-1915 and was attached to the 4th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers as a 2nd Lieutenant. When the 2nd Garrison Battalion was formed in Dublin Spring 1916 he was transferred to this unit. 2nd Garrison Battalion took part suppression of the Easter Rising. Then went with the battalion to Salonica August 1916. He was Company commander and Acting Captain from 19-Nov-1917 and Temp Captain from 15-Feb-1918. The 2nd Garrison Battalion The Royal Irish Fusiliers had been formed at Dublin in Spring 1916 and sailed in August for a destination described as’East’ and started arriving in Salonika on 24 August 1916. The description of their first months was’thankless’. During service in Macedonia, the 2nd Garrison Battalion lost three officers and 31 men from wounds and sickness as well as two taken prisoner, one of whom was an officer. April 1916 Formed at Dublin and then moved to Templemore Co. Aug 1916 Deployed to Salonika and engaged in various actions against the Bulgarian Army. 01.03.1917 Transferred to the 228th Brigade of the 28th Division and engaged in various actions against the Bulgarian Army including. 1917 The capture of Ferdie and Essex Trenches. 06.08.1917 Transferred to defend the Lines of Communication. 30.09.1918 Ended the war in Macedonia. 36mm circular silver medal with ornate scrolled ribbon suspension bar with’BORNEO’,’MALAY PENINSULA’ &’NORTHERN IRELAND clasps; the face with the crowned head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, circumscribed ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F. (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith); the reverse inscribed centrally FOR CAMPAIGN SERVICE, a Tudor crown above, all within an oak wreath; attributed on the edge to 052453 R. Near mint condition, on original ribbon. The Medal was instituted in 1964 and awarded for participation in conflicts between 1962 and 2007 where a separate campaign medal was not issued. The Northern Ireland clasp was instituted for award to personnel involved in the various operations in Northern Ireland during’The Troubles’. The qualifying period is a minimum of 30 days’ service between 14 August 1969 and 31 July 2007. The 30 days’ did not have to be consecutive. (Civil) Commanders 2nd type neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel, with neck riband, in D. Case of issue; The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O. (Military) Officers 2nd type breast badge, silver-gilt; British War and Victory Medals, both impressed named to 2. Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Coronation 1953; Efficiency Decoration, G. 2nd issue, Territorial, silver and silver-gilt, reverse officially dated 1950, with integral top riband bar, mounted as worn, together with the recipients related miniature awards & uniform buttons. London Gazette 2 January 1950: Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Benson Somerville, O. Regional Director, Northern Ireland Region, General Post Office. London Gazette 1 January 1946. Henry Benson Somerville was born in Rangoon, Burma, on the 17. Schooled at King Williams College, Isle of Man. He served as a Territorial Forces during the First World War, listed as a Sergeant with the Liverpool Regiment, being commissioned Second Lieutenant, 1/5. Liverpool Regiment (Service Bn) on 31 October 1917. Arried to Alma Hove in 1921, who died June 1934, aged 42. He was appointed an Assistant Engineer in the Post Office on 16 May 1924, and transferred to the Supplementary Reserve of Officers, Royal Corps of Signals, with the rank of Second Lieutenant, on 10 December 1927. He served with the Royal Corps of Signals during the Second World War, listed as being a Major 3. September 1939 and for his services was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1946 New Years Honours List. Somerville was appointed an Honorary Colonel of a Territorial Army unit on 15 July 1950 and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration that year. The same year he was awarded his C. Being listed in the London Gazette as being Lieutenant Colonel Benson, Regional Director of the Post Office in Northern Ireland, an unusual civilian award for a listed senior officer, perhaps with a connection to the enduring troubles in the region in which Somerville may well have been acting in a security/monitoring role with the G. He relinquished his appointment on 14 July 1955, retaining the rank of Colonel. He died in December 1982 in Poole, Dorset. We list militaria and coins weekly. Offered is an original Irish Reserve Defence Forces Long Service Medal, being a 36 mm gilt circular bronze medal with claw and ribbon bar suspension; the face with the standing figure of a Kern (Ancient Celtic foot soldier) face-on, a spear pointing forward and upward in his right hand, a shield in his left, circumscribed on two ribbons FAIRE BIOGDAC TUS NA SAOIRSE (Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Freedom); the reverse circumscribed An bonn Seirbhíse (Service Medal) and F. (An Forsa Cosanta Aituil) and S. (An Slua Muiri), the figure 7 between the two sets of initials; some light wear to the centre of the reverse; on original ribbon mounted for wear with Seirbhís top bar.
