Hambridge, Royal Engineers, who was captured and taken Prisoner of War at Tobruk on 1 June 1942. 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with Army Council enclosure, in named card box of issue addressed to Mr. Hambridge, 30 Crown Road, Kidlington, Oxford; together with the recipients German P. Identity tag Stalag IV B 259838. Herman Olaf Jack Hambridge was born in March 1922 and attested for the Royal Engineers on 16 October 1939. He served with 235 Field Park Company during the Second World War, and was captured and taken Prisoner of War at Tobruk on 1 June 1942. Held at camps initially in Italy, and then at Werdau (Germany), he was liberated on 16 April 1945. We DO NOT receive any of this and we have no control over it. WW2 British Royal Navy HMS Galatea Killed in Action Medal Group

WW2 British Royal Navy HMS Galatea Killed in Action Medal Group, awarded to Petty Officer Geoffrey Beckett Colclough. Group consists of 1939-45 star, Atlantic star, Africa star and 1939-45 War medal. The medals are housed in original card forwarding box (address details removed) and complete with the original admiralty condolence slip named to Geoffrey Beckett Colclough. Medals remain in good condition with ribbons and wax paper envelopes. Geoffrey Beckett Colclough joined the Royal Navy some time after 1928. In 1941 he was a Petty Officer serving on HMS Galatea when on the 14th December 1941 she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat off the coast of Crete. HMS Galatea was a light cruiser of Arethusa class. She saw much service during WW2, taking part in the Norway campaign, the evacuation of the British forces from Dunkirk and the operation to pursue and destroy the German battleship Bismarck. She joined the 15th Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean in late 1941. On the night of 14th December 1941, the squadron was returning to Alexandria after an unsuccessful search for an Italian convoy bound for Benghazi. Throughout the evening HMS Galatea was subjected to attacks from German dive bombers, the attacks lasted for about seven hours. The cruiser turned over and sank in three minutes. The ships Captain, 22 officers and 447 ratings were all killed. About 100 of the survivors were picked up by the destroyers HMS Griffin and HMS Hotspur. The U-Boat which sank HMS Galatea was rammed by an Italian motor torpedo boat Orione on its return after this action on 16th December 1941, she sank with no survivors. Petty Officer Colcloughs body was not recovered and his name is recorded on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. India General Service 1854-95, 2 clasps, Burma 1885-7, Burma 1887-89, beautifully hand engraved named in running script to 20395 Gunr. Generally very good, light marks, very fine overall, with top bar ears neatly removed, being display court mounted. Henry Ochiltree was born on 2 June 1856 at Haddington, East Lothian, the son of James Ochiltree and his wife Margaret. He attested for the Royal Artillery at Edinburgh on 8 October 1877, aged 21, giving his occupation as a grocer. Posted to 1st Brigade, he saw regular promotion – and reduction – in rank, being discharged upon the completion of his first period of engagement on 7 December 1889, whilst serving with the Mountain Artillery Battery. He saw extensive service in India, serving 4 years between 10/10/1885 to 20/11/1889. In later life he was admitted to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. We list militaria and coins weekly. Offered is a medal group to a long serving member of ther King’s Own Scottish Borderers, Private T. Rennie, who served in the Indian Chin Lushai Campaign of 1889, the 2nd Anglo Boer War of 1899, finishing his military career in the grisly duty of the exhumation and burial section of the Labour Corps. India General Service Medal (1854) with clasp CHIN LUSHAI 1889 90, period engraved in sloping script 942. Queens South Africa Medal 1899, 3 clasps CAPE COLONY, PAARDEBERG, JOHANNESBURG, impressed named 942 P. SCOTT: BORD: Comes with copy service papers, medal rolls & research. Also entitled to clasp SOUTH AFRICA 1901. Note the naming on the QSA, should be RENNIE not RENNY. 1919 served exhumation Companies in France. Was born in 1866 in Canongate, Edinburgh, who was working as a labourer when he enlisted into the Kings Own Scottish Borderers on the 29/4/1884 at Berwick on Tweed. He was posted to the 2. Battalion but on the 2/10/1885 he was transferred to the 1. Battalion for service in India. He was serving in India 2/10/1885 2/11/89 when the battalion was deployed to Burma 3/11/1889 6/2/1891. The Battalion was involved in the campaign against the Chin tribesmen 1889 -90. There were 2 European Battalions involved 1. Bn Cheshire Regiment (300) & 1. After a month off he re-signed on 25/5/1896 and served home until deploying to South Africa 5/1/190 22/4/1901. On the 9/6/1919 he joined the Army again but enlisted into the Labour Corps with the serial number 703975, he served in France 8/7/1919 20/4/1920. Serial number 700,000 to 711,000, 1919 enlistments for exhumation Companies in France. The 33rd, 34th, 35th, 36th and 37th (Labour) Battalions formed at Seaford (33rd) and Falmer (34th to 37th) in May and June 1916. Hughes mounted as worn; together with British Red Cross Society State Registered Nurse Badge, gilt and enamel, IMO extremely fine, see pictures for condition Evelina Hospital for Children Born abt 1890 Torrington, Devon, parents Fred Charles Hughes (a Baptist Minister census 1891) and Henrietta Florence Hughes (Terrell). She trained at the Evelian Hospital for Children (1911 census, Hospital nurse Probationer), & WW1 1914-17 Guys Hospital, London, where she subsequently held several residential posts. She would have been a young nurse during WW1 engaged in home front service and probably helped fight the “Spanish Flu” pandemic that raged during 1918-20. She was later in 1917 at the Infants’ Hospital, Vincent Square, Westminster, London becoming Matron in 1928. She joined the Territorial Army Nursing Service in 1929 and served during WW2 as Principle Matron 5th Northern General Hospital (Leicester). She is Certified as a midwife and holds the Diploma in Nursing of London University. She was President of the Leicester Royal Infirmary Nurses League and President, Royal College of Nursing 1944-46 (Copy extract from British Journal of nursing July 1945 with her picture supplied). Awarded MBE post war for her service to nursing, she died in Leicester in 1972, aged 82.
