Offered is a nice original set of medals and parchment service documents to Private Michael Walalce, who served in both the Boer War and First World War with the Royal Irish Regiment. Queens South Africa 1899 1902, 3 clasps CAPE COLONY, TRANSVAAL, WITTEBERGEN, impressed named 5712 P. Kings South Africa Medal, with 2 clasps SOUTH AFRICA 1901, SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named 5712 P. British War and Victory medals 1914 18, impressed named 6765 PTE. The medals with the original ribbons have been stapled to plastic card for display, with the KSA showing much fraying/fragility to centre. Comes with 3 original service discharge documents and copies Service Records (on CD) medal rolls, M. Pension cards & 1911 census. Michael Wallace was born in 1877 in Tipperary, he enlisted 30/12/1895 into the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment with the service number 5712. He served in the Boer War with them and discharged in Cork 29/12/1907. He enlisted into Sec D of the Army Reserve with the Royal Munster Fusiliers 13/1/1908 discharging at the completion of 4 years in Cork 12/1/1912. He served South Africa for 3 years & 338 days as of 7/1/1900. In 1911 he was living in Swansea and employed by the local council as a labourer. On the outbreak of the Great War, he re-enlisted with the Royal Irish Regiment 31/8/1914 (with the new service number 6765). He was posted to the 3. Battalion 26/9/1914, (a training unit) and was sent to Richmond Barracks in Dublin. 4//4/1916 -27/7/1916 worked at Dunston Zinc Coy, (Dunston on Tyne) to assist with the making of munitions. Posted to the 2. Landed in France 14/5/1918, however his age was against him and he was posted to the Labour Corps 6/7/1918 137. Labour Company with whom he served until demobilized 7/1/1919 (with a new service number of 573250). He died 25/10/1928 in Swansea. We list militaria and coins weekly. Atherton of the 1. Battalion East Lancashire Regiment. Five Clasps: CAPE COLONY, TRANSVAAL, ORANGE FREE STATE, SOUTH AFRICA 1901 SOUTH AFRICA 1902. Impressed on edge: 5950 CORPL: J. Confirmed on the QSA medal roll except for the clasps. (which is NOT included). From the Anglo Boer War website is of the NCOs in the Regiment. Offered is an interesting campaign medal group to Sergeant Robert George Fletcher, who saw action in the Boer War and both World Wars, whilst serving in the Middlesex Regiment, Royal Flying Crops, Royal Air Force & The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) Defence Battalion. Spanning the reign of 4 British monarchs. Queens South Africa Medal 1899 1902, with 1 clasp CAPE COLONY, impressed named 1168 C. Kings South Africa Medal 1902, with 1 clasp, impressed named 1168 COR. 1914 15 Star, impressed named 2965 SJTR. British War and Victory Medals, impressed named 405229 SGT. British War medal 1939 -45 unnamed as issued. Comes with copies service record, medal rolls, R. List, WW2 list – Defence Battalion, newspaper article and paper packets for Great War awards, together with O. Box for last addressed to’Mr R. Fletcher, 130 Gorringe Av. Sergeant Robert George Fletcher was born in 1880 at Isleworth, Middlesex, he was working as a horse keeper when he attested with the 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, 30/12/1899. He served in the Boer War with the 6th Battalion and is reported as a Lance Corporal dangerously ill 12/12/1900. The 1911 census records him working as a milk carrier in Isleworth. On the 9/11/1914 he re-enlisted with his old Regiment, likely being allotted to the 2/10. (This was the only Middlesex Battalion to serve Gallipoli) and was given the new service number 2965. He deployed as a Sergeant with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 18/7/1915, and would have served Gallipoli August December. He transferred to the R. C (possibly 17/8/1917) with the new service number 405229 ending the war with the Royal Air Force. Shortly before the outbreak of WW2 he enlisted into the Queens R. S Defence Battalion 16/5/1939 with a new service number 8313, however he was discharged 3/1/1940 under Kings Regulations Paragraph 390 (xviii)(a) – His Service No Longer Required (SNLR) for the purpose for which he was enlisted. (60 years of age). Very few medals groups will show service in 3 wars and 4 British monarchs. Queens South Africa Medal 1899 1902 with 6 clasps, BELMONT, MODDER RIVER, DRIEFONTEIN, JOHANNESBURG, DIAMOND HILL & BELFAST. Impressed named 5559 P. King’s South Africa Medal, with date clasps SOUTH AFRICA 1901 &. Medals swing mounted as worn, with pin attachment. Comes with copies service papers, medal rolls & national census. Was born on the 7. June 1875 at Trafalgar Farm, Temple Guiting, Gloucestershire. He originally enlisted into the Royal Artillery on the 12. November 1895 at Bristol, however by the 18. November 1895, he had transferred to the 3. He served with them in England until the 22/9/1899 when the battalion was posted to Gibraltar, however after only 33 days, they were sent to South Africa, where he served 26/10/99 – 6/10/1902. It is possible that he served in WW1. The 1911 census records he was working as a Army pensioner, blast furnace labourer. He died on the 23/3/1954 at 17 Salisbury Rd, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Copy of death entry states’aged 78 – retired furnace labourer’. The 3rd Battalion sailed from Gibraltar in the Ghoorkha on 25th October 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 15th November. Along with the 1st and 2nd Coldstreams and the 1st Scots Guards they composed the 1st or Guards Brigade, under Major General Sir H E Colvile. Battalion Grenadier Guards saw some heavy fight throughout the war, the casualty list for 1899 is particularly long. We list militaria and coins weekly. Boer War & WW1 British Army medal group of 4 to C. Johns, who served in both the Royal Navy and Army, was wounded at Ladysmith and served in France from 1914 during the Great War. Impressed named 2721 PTE C. JOHNS, DEVON: REGT; with Ghost dates, polished to left edge of face ; 1914 Star, impressed named (Numbers obscured as medal is sewn down) PTE C. YORK:R, with clasp; War and Victory Medals, impressed named 9306 SJT. Comes with original Royal Navy Service papers; discharge certificate – West Riding RHA; 2 x discharge certificates – 5th Royal Garrison Regiment; 2 x Devonshire Regiment; 3 x Labour Corps and copies of medal rolls, medal index cards, enlistment papers. Charles Johns was born in Millbrook, Cornwall on the 24/3/1870. After that his date of birth changed each time he enlisted. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on the 14/9/1888. Service number 146412 and served on the H. Agincourt, HMS Aurora in 1889. Enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment on the 27/9/1889, with his date of birth as July 1871. He states his previous service as being with the 4th Devon Regiment and as having previously been rejected from enlistment as Under chest development. He served: 1st Battalion Home 25/9/89-27/1/91. Passed a course Mounted Infantry 1892. Recalled to Army Service 7/10/1899. 2nd Battalion South Africa 20/10/99-19/4/01. Johns C 2721 Private 2nd Bn. Source: Natal Field Force Casualty Roll, page 61, line 6 Devonshire Regiment. QSA Medal roll remarks invalided 27/03/1901. On returning to England, he enlisted in the 5th Royal Garrison Regiment. Transferred to the Royal Berkshire Regiment 3/11/05 in Halifax (Canada). Enlisted in the West Riding Royal Horse Artillery as a Gunner14/10/08 Regimental number 161. He served until October 1912. On the 28/8/1914 he enlisted in the Special Reserve with a Regimental number of 3/9306 posted to the 3rd Battalion West Yorkshire Regt. Posted to the 20th Notts and Derby Regiment. 14/5/17 28th Coy Labour Corps. Discharged 14/5/18 No longer physically fit for war service. Re enlisted labour Corps 29/5/19.
