MCMXLCV (Germany conquered 1945), Winged head of Gorgon-Medusa facing, stuck on the tip of a spear; serpents for hair, swastika on forehead; allied flags behind (left to right) Russian, American and British; small letters below MIST – RV – ZZI. VICTORIA (victory – victory – victory), Large V (sign of victory); Statue of Liberty between; branch below; ascending squadron of planes. This’rare’ medal is commemorating the Allied Victory in World War II. The Gorgon, with its piercing eyes, wild serpent hair and haunting expression, was likely selected as a design-type because in mythology she represented the dreaded enemy and death. The addition of the swastika of her forehead indicates that the Gorgon on this medal is meant to represent the German nation.
