With the 80th anniversary of the sinking coming up soon, this is a chance to own the Historically Important medal group awarded to The Captain of the Blue Star Line SS Arandora Star which was sunk by German U-boat U-47 Captained by Ace Gunther Prien. The medals are as follows :- Posthumous Lloyd’s Medal For Bravery at Sea named CAPTAIN. SS ARANDORA STAR 2nd JULY 1940. He was also awarded the Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct at the same time {This is absent}. WW1 Officer Pair named LIEUT. M {Lieutenant Royal Indian Marines} and Mercantile Marine named EDGAR. A Poland Polish Cross of Valour {awarded to Officers for the Withdrawal of Polish Troops from France 1940}, Atlantic Star, 1939-45 Star and a War Medal. SELFE on the Pair. Her medal card states PRISCILLA JANE MOULTON nee SELFE. The SS ARANDORA STAR was carrying 1673 people including Crew, British Military Guards German and Italian Prisoners of War and civilian Internees. She was sunk 02/07/1940 with a loss of 826 including Captain Edgar Moulton. He was Posthumously awarded the Lloyds War Medal For Bravery at sea and a German Merchant Navy Prisoner was also Posthumously cited for Heroism. A truly rare medal group and the first time on the market. The only similar medal group i found was this one, but i would say the Arandora Star is rarer. A fine posthumous Kings Commendation, Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea group of seven awarded to Purser R. Clan MacArthur, in August 1943. 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45. Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea. Clan MacArthur, 12th August 1943. Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct. Oval plastic badge, on a blue riband. The Lloyds award with some edge bruising, otherwise good very fine and better (7). WW2 Husband and Wife Groups. Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery. Other: 36 (middlesex) AA batt &. 58 S/L regiment RA. Service dates: 3/3/41 to 22/7/43. Due to the various documents, It is apparent that G Todd was serving in the 36th (middlesex) AA batt, Royal Engineers, Then moving as one of the. Cadre of trained men to the newly formed. 58th (Middlesex) Searchlight Regiment. This searchlight unit was formed as part of the doubling in size of the TA at the time of the Munich Crisis in late 1938. On 1 August 1940 the Royal Engineers’ AA battalions were transferred to the Royal Artillery. By the end of 1944, the War Office began reorganising surplus anti-aircraft regiments in the UK into infantry battalions. In November, 58th Searchlight Regiment was one of the units selected for conversion. Meanwhile, 21st Army Group fighting in North West Europe was suffering a severe manpower shortage, particularly among the infantry. In February the 58th went to North West Europe the following month and did duty with Second Army until VE Day. Royal engineers old comrades ass. Membership book, dated 21-8-1940 in Harrow. Late issue medal group, in issue box to GAE Todd with entitlement slip. Medal pair, believed to be similar late issue (probable claimed at the same time). AB64 service book to Kathleen Todd, (was Harris, her name has been changed after they married in December 1941).
