Gostling served in France from 30 May 1915 with 7th Suffolk Regt and was decorated with the M. For devotion to duty (London Gazette 1 January 1918 refers) besides earning a’mention’ whilst an Acting Transport Sergeant with the Machine Gun Corps (London Gazette 25 May 1917 refers). He was discharged class’Z’ on 7 March 1919; see pictures for condition. 7th (Service) Battalion Suffolk Regiment. Formed at Bury St Edmunds in August 1914 as part of K1 and came under command of 35th Brigade in 12th (Eastern) Division. Picture of 7th Btn Suffolk Regiment- France, Arras 1917 7th Btn Suffolk Regiment first went into action at Loos September 1915, several small action in between and back at Loos early 1916. 1st July 1916 they launched an attack on the German Trenches at Ovillers with mixed success, suffering heavy losses in “Mash Valley”. August 1916 battle of Pozieres, engaged in heavy fighting and had some success taking German trenches. Next large battle was Battle of the Scarpe, 1917. They remained in the Arras sector before engaging in the battle of Cambrai October 1917, first large scale use in battle using the new secret weapon the “Tank”, pushing the enemy back several miles, but suffereing heavy casualties. British Tank 1917 In 1918 the were transported by buses to the old battle grounds of the Somme and engaged in more heavy fighting. They were greatly reduced in strength and transferred to reinforce other units, the fought during 100 days offensive at the second battle of Cambrai, battle of Selle and advanced through La Cateau until Armistice November 1918. Group of five awarded to Lance-Sergeant F. Lee, The Welch Regiment; decorated for gallantry at Welsh Valley during the Somme Offensive, he was killed in action near Ypres on 12 March 1918. ; 1914 Star 1117 Pte F. ; British War and Victory Medals 1117 Cpl. George Medal for Bravery, 4th Class, the reverse stamped’No. 901662′, this mounted Russian style. George Medal for Bravery (4th Class). Was born at Newport, Monmouthshire on 25 June 1894. Frederick was the second son of Anthony Lee, a dockyard worker who, according to a local newspaper report, had been fined 5s for drunk and disorderly behaviour two years previously. The 1901 census gives his residence as 35 Mill Parade, Newport, and he was educated at Bolt Street Boys School. He enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, The Welch Regiment, disembarking at Le Havre on 13 September 1914. Over the next two months the Battalion defended trenches on the Beauline Ridge, Aisne. The Regimental History records that by 14 November, it had suffered 5 officers and 197 other ranks killed, 16 officers and over 400 other ranks wounded. One officer and 45 other ranks had been taken prisoner. A further 124 casualties were sustained before Christmas; only one of the Battalion’s original officers remained unwounded. No fewer than 32 Military Medals were awarded to the 2nd Battalion for prolonged fighting during the Somme Offensive. On 16 July 1916 it attacked’Welsh Valley’, a communication trench running north-east to the Switch Line. Proceeding to Albert, the Battalion relieved the 1st Gloucesters in the front line north-east of Pozieres on 25 July, suffering 399 casualties over a one-month period. Private Lee was awarded the M. For bravery in the field, also receiving promotion to Corporal. His award of the Russian St. George Medal for Bravery, 4th Class featured in the. The Regimental Medal Roll. Offered is a 1918 WW1 Military Medal group of 3 to Temporary Sergeant Livesy, who would have won this award for actions during the. Military Medal (King George V) impressed named 241925 P. LIVESEY; War and Victory Medal impressed named 41925 PTE. The medals are court mounted for display. Comes with copies of the medal index card, medal roll & London Gazette. From Whittle le Woods, Lancashire. 1939 Register still working in the cotton industry and was also an Auxilliary fireman. Unfortunately Temporary Sergeant Livesey records did not survive the blitz and very little is known of his wartime service. What is known is that he served with the 2/5. Battalion East Lancashire Regiment with the regimental number of 241925. As Christopher was born in December 1898, he would have just turned 16 in 1914. The age to be posted overseas was 19 so it is doubtful that he was serving overseas prior to 1917. It was with the 1/5. Battalion that he was awarded the Military Medal. It was published in the London Gazette 11th Feb 1919 and his medal was schedule numbered 201,777. Schedule 201,000 209,999. Covers the Battle of Amiens 8. 1/5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment. Whilst on a daylight patrol with his platoon commander & rifle section on the 15th September 1918 near oppy, they suddenly came under heavy rifle, grenade & machine gun fire from the enemy’s lines less than 70 yards away. One man was killed and another was seriously wounded, and the party had to be still in shell holes for seven hours. He then volunteered to go back & bring up stretcher bearers. On his return after searching for some hours under heavy machine gun fire, located and got back the wounded officer & men. THE RECIPIENT WAS A NATIVE OF ALDEBURGH BUT WHEN HE APPLIED FOR HIS MEDALS IN 1920 HE GAVE A HOME ADDRESS IN NEW WORTLEY, LEEDS, WEST YORKSHIRE.
