WW2 Medal Group: 39-45 Star, Atlantic Star [with France and Germany] Bar, Africa Star, War Medal, Naval LSGC issued to K. 64120 Chief Stoker John Frederick Penn, Royal Navy. Naval LSGC correctly impressed to K. Medals in GVF Condition. John Frederick Penn was born in Hampstead, London on 17.2.1905. Enlisted in the Royal Navy on 29.5.1924 aged 12 years old. Gave occupation as Storeman. Posted to HMS Argus from 3.1.1925 – 2.11.1925; HMS Yarmouth 1.12.1925 – 1.9.1926; HMS Renown 2.9.1926 – 2.1.1928; HMS Fisgard 3.1.1928 – 30.4.21928; HMS Coventry 7.5.1930 – 15.3.1931; HMS Hood 16.3.1931 – 30.8.1933; HMS Duncan 23.10.1934 – 16.12.1934; HMS Keppel 17.12.1934 – 14.7.1936; HMS Enterprise 1.4.1938 – 28.10.1938; HMS Eagle 7.4.1939 – 18.2.1940; HMS Manchester 19.4.1941 & 1.6.1941. Possibly taken POW as no further postings on service sheet and the final stamp is 27.7.1946 HMS Victory for discharge? – though he has a France & Germany bar on his Atlantic star, which suggests he may have been a survivor from the sinking and picked up or POW and escaped? Would require some further research. Please note that the watermark is not on the original postcard image. WW1 MESOPOTAMIA RELIEF OF KUT 1916 D. TO NCO IN THE 1ST MANCHESTER REGIMENT ALMOST CERTAINLY FOR DUJAILAH REDOUBT 8TH MARCH 1916. DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL, G. DCM London Gazette 20th October 1916. 2085 Cpl F Smith. For Conspicuous gallantry during the attack on a redoubt. When his platoon officer and NCO had been killed, he led his platoon into the redoubt, and exhibited great courage and skill in successfully resisting a counter attack. Given the date and Gazette awards for Es Sinn, this DCM is almost certainly for Dujailah redoubt 8th March 1916. Here Manchesters formed part of the force attempting to relieve Kut but at the battle of Dujailah, advancing across a front of 400 yards, they came under heavy fire from the Sinn Aftar redoubt and cross fire from supporting trenches, they gained a footing in the redoubt and took two trenches, however with bombs running out and under heavy counterattack from the left flank, they were forced to retire with many casualties (172 killed or missing, 288 wounded) Private Stringer of the battalion would be Awarded the VC. Manchester, wrote Fraser, can look upon that sunset attack with anger, but with mournful prideThe Manchesters led the way over 3,200 yards of open ground, and in spite of terrific rifle fire actually stormed their way into the redoubt, together with the 59th Rifles, an Indian Regiment. They were bombed out, and the attempt to relieve Kut had failed. 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment was based in in. Part of the 8th. On 29 August 1914 as part of the Indian Corps and moved to. On 26 September 1914. It served on the Western Front until leaving. On 10 December 1915, whereupon it moved to Mesopotamia, landing at. On 8 January 1916. The Division moved to Egypt in March 1918 and later moved into Palestine. MIC confirms also awarded 1914 Star trio, qualifying from 27th August 1914. Condition GVF, an excellent Mesopotamia DCM. British 1914-15 Star Medal Trio Awarded To Lieutenant Arthur Morton Goodall, Of The 1st Battalion Durban Light Infantry (South African Infantry). Lot includes 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, photocopy of his CWGC certificate, service card, pictures & biography. Mr Goodall served with the 1st Bn. Durban Light Infantry (South African Infantry). The Goodall family are intrinsically linked to the “Lever Brothers” company, Arthur being born in “Port Sunlight”. Indeed, he appears on the war memorial for the model village. His father worked for the firm, eventually managing their interests in South Africa, hence the family emigrated there when Arthur was a boy. Arthur would return to the UK to study engineering at Manchester University, where he was known for his contribution to the university sports teams and the Officer Training Corp. He is commemorated on the University of Manchester War Memorial and Hulme Hall Memorial. The two photographs of Arthur date to around this time (showing him in rugby uniform). At the outbreak of war, he and his unit were involved in the invasion of German South-West Africa (now known as Namibia). Mr Goodall was killed in action on the 21/03/1916 during the Action of Soko River, he is buried at Moshi Cemetery in Tanzania. His full entitlement is on offer here. Name and number correctly impressed on all medals. It is recorded that Arthur died as he went to the aid of his badly wounded sergeant, whilst bandaging his wounds Arthur was hit and killed or died shortly after. However, I think the most fitting memorial to him comes from Hulme Hall/Manchester University; Arthur possessed the gift of friendship in a marked degree and was very popular in the Hall and at the University. He was a familiar figure, in cowboy costume, at the shrove Tuesday celebrations and entered into all University activities with enthusiasm. In him the Hall loses one of its stalwarts. It should also be noted, that Arthur’s brother, 2nd Lieutenant Harold Armitage Goodall R. A was killed on the Western Front in March 1918. Much of the above research (and more besides) comes from “Chairs That Stand Empty: The Men Behind the Names on the Hulme Hall First World War Memorial” by A. I thoroughly recommend the book, particularly if interested in this medal group. The 1914-15 Star (Pip) was awarded to those who served in a theatre of war between 5.8.1914 and 31.12.1915, except those who had already qualified for a 1914 Star. The Victory medal (“Wilfred”) follows a design agreed upon at Versailles in 1919. The medal is in lacquered bronze and shows a winged victory holding a palm branch. All orders are dispatched fully insured and wrapped appropriately. Wright’s Collectables was established in 2010, we specialise in bringing affordable military history collectables to collectors worldwide. We are stockists of British medals and decorations, militaria and coins (ancient to modern). History is our passion and provided the inspiration for our business.
