Joined the navy, from what I can tell, after his Princeton Graduation in 1904, his father (Asher Carter Baker) was also in the Navy at this rank during WWI. He was the Great-Great Nephew of General William T. Sherman, descending directly through WT’s sister Mary Elizabeth Sherman and William James Reese… Hence his middle name of Sherman. His career is basically as follows: Great White Fleet USS Vermont, Lt. Commander in the Mexican Campaign, WWI Flag Secretary to Admiral Caperton USS Pittsburgh, 1918 US Navy Commissioner to Chile, 1919 US Navy aide to Brazilian president visiting the US, 1925-28 Lt. Governor and Naval Attache to the US Virgin Islands, 1930′s Staff of Admirals Schofield and Leigh. Letter of Commendation for Meritorious Service 1921 for being Supply Officer to the US Pacific Fleet. He obviously served up to almost WWII or was called out of retirement, as there are signs of his getting the American Defense Medal. LOT INCLUDES: US Navy version of the Mexican Service medal in matching numbered box with original ribbon bar, miniature medals with Mexican Service and WWI Victory with Patrol Bar, miniature ribbon bar for this last one, Numerous ribbon bars with these, as well as Silver Star on each WWI Victory ribbon for the 1921 citation, all mounted in the lid of the jewelry box shown. Also American Defense medal ribbon included in some. Brown leather belt and buckle, showing age, but not rotten, needing leather treatment or shoe polish, several gilt buckles and catches, as shown, misc. Naval buttons of the early style with right facing eagle. The small leather box with his initials on top houses most of this material, the lid of which is going to detach soon but is still held on, albeit by a small part of the leather hinge. Great White Fleet port visitation medals include: 1908 Australia gilt with enamel, small ring for attaching to something, size of a quarter. Japan enamel stick pin of unusually beautiful design, like silver WELCOME US NAVY AFA on back, small US and Japanese flags intertwined with collar holder, about 4 square overall. Enamel Japanese or Chinese stickpin badge with 1908 and mum, WELCOME in its design, enamel piece about size of a quarter to half dollar. Uruguay (I think) stick pin device missing the pin, no other info, 1.75 tall. Silver plated medal larger than a half dollar , in Spanish, dated July 1917 from Buenos Aires, with large flag and National colors ribbon in top and stick pin. Another July 1917 Buenos Aires medal IN ENGLISH with bronze finish and smaller ribbon setup in top. This is a super little lot, all of which came with his father’s stuff, which I have kept. Some notes I made while researching this man are included, and sloppy as they are, they might help with further research. See image and title for any info, and ask any questions you may have! GENUINE FULL SIZE MEDALS. NAMING ON MEDALS : 17932 PTE. WILLIAM SERVED WITH THE 2ND INNIS FUS IN FRANCE. HE LATER SERVED WITH THE RFC. PAPERS CAN BE EMAILED IF REQUIRED. The 7/8th Battalion, The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was formed on the 23rd of August 1917 when the 7th Battalion amalgamated with 8th. They were in action in the Third Battles of Ypres. In 1918 they were in action on the Somme 1918 suffering very heavy casualties and on the 22nd April 1918 the battalion was reduced to cadre strength. On the 17th of June they transferred to 102nd Brigade, 34th Division then on the 26th to GHQ Troops. The battalion was re-established with men joining from 8th Battalion, Rifle Brigade and on the 3rd of July 1918 they joined 89th Brigade, 30th Division. They were in action during the Advance in Flanders and by the Armistice had crossed the River Scheldt with advanced units reaching the line between Ghoy and la Livarde, north west of Lessines. In January 1919 30th Division took up duty at the Base Ports of Dunkirk, Calais, Boulogne and Etaples and demobilisation began. 15th Apr 1918 One hundred men of the 7/8 Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers received a suspended court-martial on the same day. The battalion was being disbanded and they went on strike to prevent it. The high number of non Irish soldiers striking shows the camaraderie and respect these merged replacements had for a regiment they previously had no attachment to. The unusual event was remarkable in that the sentence normally punishable by death was suspended. They all went back to fight the following day.
