Comes with “Mostly Unsung” research. BARLOW was a 20-year-old Flying Officer Pilot from Adelaide, South Australia. Upon joining RAAF heavy bomber squadron number 467, he had completed a’second dickie’ trip and then a successful bombing trip to Caen on 18th July in PB-234 before he and his mainly Australian crew, flying Lancaster LM-119, went missing on the night of 20/21 -July 1944 after successfully bombing Courtrai. All seven crew died. Mostly Unsung’ research included with the medals. A very nice active service group. VERY DIFFICULT to find KIA RAAF Aircrew, let alone pilots, especially with all stars and medals correctly impressed. There are two pictures of Barlow available on the AWM site. WW2 Medal Group Pilot Casualty 828 Squadron Fleet Air Arm HMS Implacable

World War Two Medal group to a pilot from the Fleet Air Arm who was killed in action during attacks on enemy targets in on 9th December 1944. The group were posthumously awarded to Temporary Sub Lieutenant (A) Leonard Anthony Cole R. Leonard Cole came from Eastbourne in Sussex and was 23 years old when he was killed. Leonard was a pilot of a Barracuda II in 828 Squadron based on the aircraft carrier HMS Implacable. 828 squadron were a torpedo bomber reconnaissance squadron who had earlier taken part in the attacks on the Turpitz as part of Operation Goodwood. Tirpitz and the Far East[edit]. 828 Squadron was re-formed as a torpedo bomber reconnaissance squadron in March 1944. Equipped with 12 Barracuda IIs they joined the 2nd Naval Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance Wing and joined the Home Fleet aboard HMS Implacable in August that year. [2] They briefly transferred to HMS Formidable in August 1944 and carried out attacks on the German battleship Tirpitz as part of Operation Goodwood. Interestingly enough, there are photos of HMS Implacable taken from the support carried HMS Trumpeter on 9th December 1944, the actual day that Leonard Cole was killed in action on the Imperial War Museum website. There are also photos of the pilots who took part in the attacks on that day and a photo showing damage to another aircraft who took part in the same action. One is titled – Sub Lieut (A) R K L Yeo RNVR, of Exeter, examining flak damage to aileron of his Wildcat on returning from the attack. Copies of these photos shown above and can be seen on the Imperial War Museum website. The damage shown to this other aircraft which took part in the attacks would confirm the cause of the loss of Leonard’s aircraft. Leonard Cole is commemorated on the Solent Memorial as well as Eastbourne Grammer School memorial where had had been a pupil. Worth of more research. DURING ONE OF THESE MISSIONS PERRY AND ALLUM WERE SHOT DOWN CRASHING NEAR SANCTUARY WOOD. BOTH WERE INJURED, PERRY WAS SHOT IN THE THIGH BY A MACHINE GUN BULLET WHICH ALSO DAMAGED HIS KNEE, HE NEVER FLEW AGAIN. THE INJURY TO HIS LEG RESULTED IN HIS DAMAGED LEG BEING 2 1/2 SHORTER THAN HIS GOOD LEG. A SPECIAL BOOT WAS MADE FOR HIS DAMAGED LEG. SADLY IN 1937 PERRY FELL DOWN THE STAIRS OF A BUS AND DIED OF HIS INJURIES. THE MEDALS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH NO DAMAGE. WW2 Australian medal group 2/9 Commando Squadron. WW2 group of 4. 39-45 star, Pacific star, BMW and ASM all correctly impressed VX140647 LJ Patten. With original medal entitlement sheet showing full entitlement. Enlisted in the AIF 6/3/43. Killed in action 4/3/45 aged 20 at Arohemi, Aitape with the 2/9 Cavalry Commando Squadron. Buried Lae War Cemetery, Papua New Guinea. Very rare to the Commando Sqd. From the official history. This force set out on 4th March and soon encountered opposition. Five Japanese were killed on the way and Arohemi was found to be defended by a force (it was the III/239th Battalion) well dug in. An attack that day failed, Lieutenant Williams (9) and one trooper being killed. Williams, VX42397 ; 2/9 Cdo Sqn. Share broker’s clerk; of Melbourne ; b. Melbourne , 10 Jul 1918. Killed in action 4 Mar 1945. Although not mentioned by named the trooper referred to would be Pattern. Comes with a photo of his memorial plaque from a cemetery in Australia. World War II Medallion. Condition: Used, and in good shape. The coin is 2 inches in diameter. The 319th Fighter Interceptor Training Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force. Its last assignment was with Aerospace Defense Command. S Interceptor Weapons School at Tyndall Air Force Base. Florida, where it was inactivated on 30 November 1977. Established in mid-1942 as a fighter squadron, trained under I Fighter Command. Primarily in the northeast with Republic P-47 Thunderbolts. Deployed to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. In Algeria, taking part in the North African Campaign. Supporting the United States Fifth Army. S advance with tactical air support. Attacked enemy armored columns, troop concentrations, road transport, bridges and other targets of opportunity. Also flew combat missions over Sicily. From airfields in Tunisia, supporting the Allied ground forces in the liberation of the island. In late 1943 and continued tactical operations as part of Twelfth Air Force. Supported Fifth Army as it advanced into central and northern Italy during the Italian Campaign. Being re-equipped with North American P-51D Mustangs. Continued combat operations until the German Capitulation; demobilizing in northern Italy during the summer of 1945. 50 cents for each additional coin stateside.
