In the rank of First Lieutenant with the 101st Airborne Division, United States Army, he was awarded the Silver Star under General Orders No. 4 (1945), for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy tanks at Noville, Belgium, as part of the Siege of Bastogne, on December 20, 1944 during the Second World War. In the newspaper article, Captain Heber Minton stated to the reporter that Stanfield’s learning.
