I have done some research and he was an Ambulance Driver in the Australian Ambulance Corps. The Australian Voluntary Hospital was a military hospital staffed by Australian expatriates in England that served on the Western Front between 1914 and 1916. For much of this time it was the only Australian presence on the Western Front. Later transferred to the Royal Air Force (RAF) 01/04/1918. I have added some information about the hospital below. This extremely rare medal was awarded to A. To have a 1914 star named to an Australian Unit is such a rare find. From my research there are only around 233, 1914 stars actually named to an Australian Unit. Although not Australian, this is one of only 208 ever issued. A really rare medal that deserves to be in a museum. It also makes it rarer than even the rare Gallantry awards. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS.
