WW1 mercantile & other medals, badges, certificate, photos, ephemera + Ost family

WW1 mercantile & other medals, badges, certificate, photos, ephemera & more – Ost family. This is a collection of mainly military items belonging to a father & son which covers WW1 & WW2 although most of the items belong to the father. Although I have not researched the family, I have discovered the following information from the contents of this collection: Alfred James OST was born in 1871 on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. He qualified as a master mariner and spent his working life on the sea. He died in 1944 and was buried at sea on the request of his son – letter describing the burial is included. This is a list of all the items included in this sale. Most of them were Alfred’s, some were his son’s Alfred Arthur Ost – who appeared to call himself Arthur. The photos and ephemera involve both of them and the wider family. A small attache case (catch missing) which contains:A union flag with’British Made’ printed in one corner – loose threads, some tears, some holes quite dirty. A mercantile marine medal & war medal both stamped’Alfred J. Ost together with related paperwork. WW2 defence and war medals in box with paperwork for A. WW1 period wristwatch with no strap or winder. A Hudson’s patent whistle’The Thunderer’ – very well worn with hardly any original silver finish on the surface. Top and bottom sections of a cardboard box for an’Iver Johnson’ revolver handgun. The original’Certificate of Competence as Master’ to Alfred James Ost dated 1904 printed on fabric both sides. A’John Bull self filling safety’ pen with 14 ct gold nib – crack around part of the lid. A blue & white enamel badge’On War Service 1915′ with’6049′ and’Gaunt, London’ stamped on back. A sheet of 12 unused large gilt brass buttons and a sheet of 12 unused small gilt brass buttons all identical with’Bullard King & Co’ round the edge and a pennant in the centre with’BK&Co. A padded fabric cap badge with gold braid leaves surrounding a pennant with’BK & Co’ in the centre. Original label on the back’Harvey’s Suit 17, London Street EC. A pair of unused arm bands with four bars of gold thread. RAF cap badge with one lug missing on back, Royal Artillery sweetheart brooch with blue enamel & a full size R. Cap badge with slider. Alfed James Ost’s marriage certificate dated 1910. An envelope containing photo negatives (appear to be family orientated) and about 50 photographs including Alfred James as a boy, at least one during his career and many of him and his family during retirement. An autograph book with’Arthur Alfred Ost’ on the inside cover – contains a couple of good sketches. A quanity of ephemera which appears to be relating to wills, bequests etc. There is a letter from Alfred which he wrote (or typed) on VE day from Barton Stacey camp in which he explains why leave is cancelled (amongst other things). All the items fit inside the case which is 11.25″ wide, 7.75″ deep and just under 3 high (285mm x 195mm x 72mm). Please be aware that although this is a smoke free home, some of these items have a musty or stale smoke smell. The item “WW1 mercantile & other medals, badges, certificate, photos, ephemera + Ost family” is in sale since Tuesday, November 08, 2016. This item is in the category “Collectables\Militaria\World War I (1914-1918)\Medals/ Ribbons”. The seller is “trinketorium” and is located in Wimborne. This item can be shipped worldwide.

This is a rare lot, and I would be happy to keep it but. I did not have a reference to price this none comparible! And the worst I can do is say no. VERY HAPPY TO OFFER THIS MUSEUM QUALITY LOT! BY FAR the nicest and most complete WW1 lot I have EVER come across! Coupled with HIS SON’S WW2 LOT, and.. The PHOTOS OF THEM WEARING UNIFORMS TOGETHER! This came from the estate of the son William S. Austin of Brevard, NC. The WW1 lot was from his father, William C. Austin, who moved to Brevard shortly after the war from Harrisville, NY. The family owned an art and camera shop in town. Austin after surviving ww1! And his wife, died in a car crash in 1955. At that time, all of his WW1 items were carefully packed in plastic, and placed in a trunk. The 48 star flag that is included was on his coffin and was also placed in the trunk. They were not opened again until last month. His son never moved out of the house until recently at age 96, and had no children. These items came together and they should remain together. The father, William C. Austin, enlisted in the 6th US Engineers, company E. He was attached to a pioneer group and was awarded 6 stars for his campaigns and promoted to corporal. He married just after the war and almost exactly a year later William S. The son, William S. Austin, was in the 20th special USAAF group that included the “Enola Gay”. There are original photos of that plane. He served in the pacific theater and was an airman. I cannot list everything that this comes with but I will try to give some highlights and cover what i can. Uniform jacket w/ patches, marksman, and 6 star campaign badge. Over coat, pants, leg wraps, campaign hat, HELMET, with division insignia and liner. Gas mask in original bag w/ name. Papers giving him orders to leave France. Off bench, back row. Original photos of him in France, wearing uniform. Membership cards for 3rd “Marne” division. Box of letters he received while serving, mostly from his future wife (approx 150). Medals for service at Verdun, occupation, 3rd division, St. Welcome home books from Madison county, NY. Book on atrocities in ww1. Large photo of a friend in his platoon KIA. One of the letters is from his girlfriend thanking William. Letters sent to him for his promotions and medals. More photos, one portrait of him, multiple of platoon. Stack of photos, RPPC, post cards. Some photos are gory, many postcards are of buildings. Every pass for his leaves in France and Germany. All of his discharge papers, enlistment, promotions, etc (rolled). Large photo of German POW’s. Iron Cross, german button, unknown button, piece of SHRAPNEL story of this? ! Photos of father and son both wearing uniforms at time of sons enlistment. Bottom row: son William S. 2 uniform jackets (one initialed), campaign hats. Stack of photos (downed japanese planes, japan, etc). 4 sets silver wings. 2 original pictures of “Enola Gay”. Some interesting photos of downed planes, japan, landing boats, Nazi propaganda, etc. There is more that I did not mention, but those are the more interesting things. These lots by themselves are very good. Together as a father / son experience they are exponentially so! Every piece is in excellent condition and was packed away for over half a century. Almost none of it seems fragile or yellowed. I have been collecting my entire life and I have never come across a better ww1 lot or a uniform in better condition with NO holes. You will not be disappointed! Please see photos for description and condition. The item “MUSEUM QUALITY WW1 / WW2 LOT! FATHER & SON, Uniforms, photos, medals, helmet” is in sale since Sunday, September 25, 2016. A VERY SCARCE FULL SIZE1914 15 TRIO OF MEDALS CORRECTLY NAMED TO 22828 PTE. WITH TWO VERY NICE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH POST CARDS OF THE RECIPIENT. THEY HAVE A VERY UNUSUAL MOUNT WHICH CONSISTS OF THREE BARS SOLDERED TO THE BACK OF THE SUSPENSION BAR TO PREVENT THE MEDALS FROM SWINGING TYPICAL OF THE GUARDS. THIS HAS NOT DAMAGED THE MEDALS IN ANY WAY WHICH ARE ALL FREE MOVING. THEY ARE ON THEIR ORIGINAL RIBBONS. WHAT IS NICE ABOUT THIS GROUP IS THAT JACK SHOESMITH JOINED THE GRENADIER GUARDS IN 1915 AND THEN WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE SCARCE GUARDS MACHINE GUN REGIMENT WHICH IS CONFIRMED ON HIS MEDAL INDEX CARD AND HIS PENSION PAPERS WHICH ARE ON ANCESTRY. MEDAL INDEX CARD CONFIRM CHANGE OF ARMY NUMBER WHEN HE TRANSFERRED TO GMGR. A VERY SCARCE SET OF MEDALS 100% GENUINE.
