The USS Phonex was laded down in 1935 and launched on 12 March 1938. She was commissioned later that year. Her shakedown cruise took her to South America eventually homeporting in Pearl Harbor. She was there on 7 December 1941 during the Japanese suprise attack. She was soon underway and escaped unscathed. During the course of WWII she earned 11 Battle Stars and earned the nickname “Lucky Phoenix”. Her luck ran out when she was torpedoed and sunk during the Falklands War on 2 May 1982 by the HMS Conqueror with heavy loss of life. Commissioni9ng Cover for the CL-46 USS Phoenix dated 9 Oct 1938.
