BRITISH WAR MEDAL and VICTORY MEDAL. Named as issued to. In absolutely excellent condition – almost mint on old original ribbons. Also come with copies of his medal index card and medal rolls showing that this was his full medal entitlement, and copies of some research. John is believed to have been a pre-War Regular Soldier who was a reservist in 1914. He lived in Stockport, Cheshire, to the south of Manchester, where he was born in 1873. He was mobilised and served with the 1st Battalion. Manchester Regiment, landing in France on 16 Feb 1915. He was wounded in the back by shrapnel and was evacuated to England for treatment. During his recovery he married Emily Sheratt in Stockport. When John was well enough he was sent to the 3rd Reserve Battalion pending return to his own Battalion. He was allowed home leave and died in his sleep at home on 23 Sep 1915. John was buried in Stockport Borough Cemetery. Please feel free to ask questions and request further images. WW1 bronze death plaque in memory of. With his BRITISH WAR MEDAL and VICTORY MEDAL named as issued to. Also comes with copies of his medal index card and medal roll showing that this was his full medal entitlement and that he served in the 2nd/5th Battalion Territorial Force – raised in Bury, Lancashire. James was born on 21 Jul 1893 at Radcliffe, Lancashire, to John and Martha Ann Crompton. He married Eliza in 1913 and they lived at. 53 Bank Top, Radcliffe. He worked as a’carter’. Pte Crompton died from wounds received IN ACTION from which he died. His body must have been lost because he has no known grave and is remembered on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING IN BELGIUM. His death was assumed as being 20 Sep 1917. Also comes with A PHOTO of James and Eliza with their child, and some research, also a copy of the King’s letter of condolence and copy memorial scroll that would have accompanied the plaque. WW1 bronze death plaque in memory of. In its original cardboard box of issue, with his 1914-15 STAR; BRITISH WAR MEDAL and VICTORY MEDAL, named as issued to. Comes with a good copy of the King’s Letter of Condolence that would have accompanied the plaque, and a copy of his medal index card. In superb uncleaned condition. John was born at Salford, Lancashire in 1897. In 1911 he was living at 46 Elton Street, Lower Broughton, Salford, and he was an’errand boy’. He enlisted at Manchester and served in the 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. He entered France on 17 May 1915. During the Battle of the Somme John was KILLED IN ACTION aged 19 – DEATH PRESUMED ON OR SINCE 20 JUL 1916. His body must have been lost on the battlefield as he has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme – 72337 missing soldiers are named on the Memorial.
