You are looking at the Logbook and Medals to Sgt Derrick John Hardy who flew with 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron who took part in 24 sorties including the U Boat pens at Trondheim and the bombing of Dresden and many other ops. Included is also his cloth sleeve badge and cap badge. The medals are the War, Defence, 39-45 Star and France and Germany Star. Log book has lots of details on his training and sorties, also certificates for various courses he took including gunnery bomb aiming and navigation. You are looking at a logbook grouping. Belonging to Pilot, Wing Commander Arthur. E, he took command of 578 Squadron after serving with 10 Squadron for a few ops at the start of August 1944 including Foret De Nieppe, St Philbert Ferne, Foret De Mormal. Then James joined 578, he took part in ops towards the end of August 1944 through to January 1945 on ops including Venlo, Calais, Sterkrade, Osnabruck, Magdeburg, he has nicely annotated D-Day 6th June 1944 and June 12th first V1 to fall on England, then later on the same page the first V-2 to fall on London on September 8th and also annotated a few ops with what the target was i. E Oil depot, V-2 Base, and Close support. James took command of 578 Squadron quite quickly due to the death of their previous, being Wing Commander D S S Wilkerson, who unfortunately died in a plane crash, post war James had a book and also unveiled the Memorial at the 578 Base at Burn. WW2 British RAF DFM Medal Group 138 Squadron SOE Sgt V Hodgkinson with Logbook. DFM named as follows; 1072877 F/S Hodgkinson RAF. The other medals of course are not named as they are British standard issue. The logbook covers his service from May 10 1941 to March 19 1946. All operations for 138 squadron are written in red and are detailed as Operations as Detailed. His citation for the DFM is as follows. Flight Sergeant Hodgkinson has now completed 38 operations. He has proved to be a keen and most efficient Wireless Operator. His abilit has greatly contributed to the efficiency of his crew and he has set a fine example to other Wireless Operators in the squadron. On the night of the 14th May 1943 when his aircraft was damaged by flak and was in difficulties with engine failure at only 300 feet, Flight Sergeant Hodgkinson calmly carried on and obtained W/T fixes which were instrumental in the safe return of the aircraft. Included in this lot is a copy of the modern soft cover squadron history of 138 by Chris Ward. A copyof his recomendation for honours and awards, a copy of flight magazine listings his DFM. Included not but not pictured is three unit photos with one of them being in front of a halifax. No writting on the back of them to designate unit but one would assume 138 squadron. Also a photo of him with possibly his wife and mother in front of buckinham palace during the investiture of the DFM by the king. Great Special Operations Executive grouping which rarely come up. Flying officer Frederick Reginald John Ellis (184568) RAFVR. Enlisted in RAFVR 20.10.41 and served continuously until released on 31.10.46 Commissioned August 1944. F/O Ellis was educated at Ackmar Road school and worked for an engineering firm before joining the RAFVR in 1941. He received his wings in Rhodesia and since served with a spitfire wing of the Mediterranean Allied Air Force in North Africa, Italy, the Adriatic and Greece. He was then stationed at Malta in 45 serving with 73 squadron. He married Nursing Sister May Russell in a ceremony at Athens Hospital.
