Rare Original Ww2 Usmc Marine & Expeditionary Medal Wake Island Bar

Original Wake Island bar, as worn on the US Marine Corps and US Navy Expeditionary Medal. NO MEDAL, JUST THE BAR PICTURED. Measures approximately 1 1/2 across. Minor storage type marks and tarnish. All originals have similar numismatic characteristics, including the soft gold tone finish and number and shape of the rope segments in the border. This bar was awarded to all naval veterans of the Battle for Wake Island. Manufactured by the US Mint, under contract from the Navy following WWII. There are two official types. The first order was in May of 1942 for 550 bars. These have the drooping E, where the lower arm of the letter E in WAKE slants at a noticeable angle. This was corrected somewhat in the second order (for an unknown number of bars), as the drooping of the lower arm is less pronounced, as is the case with the bar shown here. Only 519 men were eligible wear the Wake Island bar on the ribbon of the Expeditionary Medal; 447 USMC personnel, 9 Navy officers and 63 Navy enlisted men. Additional bars were produced for use in official medal displays and for replacement should a bar be lost or destroyed by accident. This is a hobby not a living, so I try to keep it fun, otherwise why do it. _gsrx_vers_632 GS 6.9.8 (632).
