HISTORY OF THE AWARD. Hungarian Medal of Merit (Magyar Érdemérem), 1922 – Circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the cross of St Stephen upon a crown and three hills from the Hungarian coat of arms, inscribed’A HAZÁÉRT’ (For the Homeland) above, encircled by a laurel wreath; the reverse inscribed’SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS’ (If God is for us, who can be against us) and dated in Roman numerals’MCMXXII’ (1922). The Medal was one of a series of awards established in June 1923 by Admiral Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya, Regent of newly-independent Hungary. It was suppressed on 14 February 1945.
