The War Medal 1939-45 was awarded for 28 days full-time service in the Armed Forces between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Here’s a really nice group of six medals, mint in box of issue plus extras to an Australian Army Officer. Six Medals as follows below. 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence of the UK Medal, British War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45, all mint, wrapped in tissue paper as issued, with ribbons, all correctly impressed naming to’NX9293 D. Boothroyd, 73 Dalrymple Ave, Chatswood, N. All in original tissue wrap. Lovely large black & white copy of Boothroyd in Australian Army Summer Uniform as Captain, showing medal ribbons for the three stars (this ribbon bar included with group). Lovely contemporary miniature medal bar. Of six medals made by K. Ribbon bar of three stars. As worn in picture of Captain Boothroyd, clearly contemporary. 29th May 1908 in Southport England. 7th AUSTRALIAN DIVISION INTELLIGENCE SECTION. There are a number of pictures of Boothroyd available on the Australian War Memorial Website, in particular a group shot of No 1 Training school, Special Advanced Training Course, No 1, Australian Corps of Signals (Cypher). Boothroyd is identified as a Lieutenant at the time (1944). A well-travelled soldier, having medals for the Middle-East and Pacific Campaigns. This extremely rare medal was awarded to A. To have a 1914 star named to an Australian Unit is such a rare find. From my research there are only around 233, 1914 stars actually named to an Australian Unit. Although not Australian, this is one of only 208 ever issued. A really rare medal that deserves to be in a museum. It also makes it rarer than even the rare Gallantry awards. I have done some research and he was an Ambulance Driver in the Australian Ambulance Corps. The Australian Voluntary Hospital was a military hospital staffed by Australian expatriates in England that served on the Western Front between 1914 and 1916. For much of this time it was the only Australian presence on the Western Front. Later transferred to the Royal Air Force (RAF) 01/04/1918. I have added some information about the hospital below. When the First World War. Broke out in August 1914, Lady (Rachel) Dudley, the wife of the former Governor-General of Australia. Decided to create a hospital from Australian doctors and nurses who were in the United Kingdom. There were relatively large numbers of these; while doctors and nurses could be trained in Australia, advanced qualifications still required a trip overseas. Lady Dudley discussed her proposal with King George V. And then with the Secretary of State for War. And the British Army’s Director General Army Medical Services. Who authorised the hospital. The hospital was formally offered to the British government by the Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. On 15 August 1914. Volunteers responded to advertisements that Lady Dudley placed in English newspapers on 17 August 1914. Women doctors were not accepted, but women nurses were welcomed. The Australian Voluntary Hospital was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William L’Estrange Eames. An officer in the Australian Army Medical Corps. Who had served in the Second Boer War. And was holidaying in England with his family at the time. He was unable to join the Australian Imperial Force. (AIF), which was not accepting enlistments outside of Australia. He was granted the temporary rank of lieutenant colonel. In the Royal Army Medical Corps. Ida Greaves, from Royal Newcastle Hospital. The hospital soon reached a strength of 120 staff, of whom 36 were nurses. The Australian Voluntary Hospital assembled its personnel and equipment at a camp established on the grounds of the Ranelagh Club. Which had been loaned for the purpose. It departed for France on 29 August 1914 on Lord Dunraven. S yacht “Greta”, which had been accepted by the Admiralty. As a transport for medical units. And moved to Le Havre. Owing to the German advance, the hospital was evacuated to St Nazaire. On 2 September, and reopened there 5 September. The 100-bed hospital was set up in a park under canvas, with a school and house close by rented for various facilities. It began receiving casualties from the retreat from Mons. On 26 October 1914, the Australian Voluntary Hospital moved to Wimereux. Where it established a 200-bed hospital. The hospital was well equipped, with motor ambulances donated by organisations in Australia, a pathology laboratory and the only X-ray unit in the area. A day after it opened on 29 October, it began receiving patients from the First Battle of Ypres. Much of the unit’s tents which accommodated the male personnel of the hospital were lost in a blizzard on 11 November 1914, and the men moved to the Golf club house of the Hôtel du Golf et Cosmopolite in Wimereux, which was eventually leased by the hospital, and became its officers’ mess. For a time, the Australian Voluntary Hospital was the only Australian presence on the Western Front. But in April 1916, Australian Army units began arriving from the Middle East in large numbers. The Australian Voluntary Hospital’s site in Wimereux was taken over by No. 3 Australian General Hospital, AIF in June 1916. The Australian Voluntary Hospital was then absorbed into the British Army. Subsequently evacuated from Gallipoli on the 2/11/15 and embarked for Australia on the 3/1/16. He was discharged permanently unfit on the 10/8/1916. Here’ s a lovely decoration group to an Australian soldier serving in the Australian Imperial forces (AIF) comprising a trio of medals. This is his full entitlement (no 1914-15 Star entitlement: enlisted in 1916) comprising Military Medal (MM) British War Medal (BWM) and Victory Medal (VM) all correctly impressed as follows. Military Medal:’4542 Pte V. BWM & VM to’4542 PTE. Medals are court mounted and in EF condition. The medals are accompanied by a research article for a local historical society in Victoria Australia, the Greensborough Historical Society (a suburb of Mbourne, Victoria). The article was researched and written by. Val Wilson who was apparently Splatt’s grand-niece (see the photos). The article has some nice pictures of Splatt in uniform and post war with wife. More research could be done, his military file is available online. Splatt was born in Greensborough on 7th February, 1893. He enlisted in January 1916 with a group of mates. They all became part of the 11th reinforcements of the 22nd Battalion, AIF. In August-September 1918, the Battalion helped capture Mont St. Quentin, and then took part in the last fighting by the AIF on the Western Front at Montbrehain in October 1918. Splatt took part in the battles of 1916, 1917 and 1918, being wounded in both 1917 and 1918, and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in June 1918, for actions at Ville-sur-Ancre, as follows. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Ville-sur-Ancre on the morning of the 9th inst. This man was acting as company runner and though wounded whilst advancing onto the enemy position, he remained on duty and refused to go to the R. He rendered invaluable assistance to his company commander in maintaining communication with the Platoon in the advanced posts, passing many times across the most exposed positions under severe M. He continued to carry messages and rendered splendid service right through the operation. He lived in Greensborough, then Oakleigh for the rest of his life. He died in 1967 aged 74 years.
