Offered is an rare Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire group of eight attributed to Brigadier Sir Duncan Anderson, Chairman of the Federal Power Board of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, who served with the Royal Engineers during the Second World War as Deputy Director of Works on General Eisenhowers Staff in the North African campaign, and as Director of Works on Field Marshal Alexanders Staff in the Italy campaign. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, K. (Civil) Knight Commanders 2nd type set of insignia, comprising neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel; Star, silver, silver-gilt, and enamel, with gold retaining pin, with full and miniature width neck ribands, in Garrard, London, case of issue; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, 1 clasp, 1st Army; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with M. Oak leaf; Coronation 1953; Efficiency Decoration, G. 1st issue, silver and silver-gilt, reverse officially dated 1946, with G. Second Award Bar and E. Third Award Bar, with integral top Territorial riband bar, mounted as worn, together with a set of related miniature awards, the T. Lacking the Third Award Bar, these housed in a Spink, London leather award case. (Civil) London Gazette 1 January 1960: Duncan Law Anderson, Esq. Chairman of the Federal Power Board. (Military) London Gazette 24 August 1944: The Recommendation states:’Exceptional responsibilities have fallen to this officer since the establishment of this headquarters at the end of October. The organisation of our bases in Italy, the rehabilitation of roads, water, power, and other essential services and the development of local sources of supply and manufacture of engineering materials have constituted a task of formidable magnitude. The quiet efficiency with which Colonel Anderson has grappled with these problems has been most praiseworthy. London Gazette 11 January 1945:’In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Italy. Duncan Law Anderson was born in Aberdeen on 10 June 1901 and was educated at Robert Gordons College, Aberdeen. He practiced as a civil engineer on railway, road, bridge, and tunnel construction from 1922-39, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant, 47th (2nd London) Division, Royal Engineers (Territorial Force) on 29 June 1925. Having been appointed Major, Engineer and Railway Staff Corps, Royal Engineers, on 26 August 1936, he served with the Royal Engineers during the Second World War, and was the Deputy Director of Works on General Eisenhowers Staff in the North African campaign, and Director of Works (with the temporary rank of Brigadier) on Field Marshal Alexanders Staff in the Italy campaign. For his services during the War he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished services in Italy, and was promoted Colonel, 11 April 1945. Following the end of the War Anderson held various government appointments, notably as a Member of two Foreign Office Missions led by Lord Strang to Washington in 1947 (the first on the rehabilitation of the Ruhr coal industry, and the second on finance and control of German foreign trade); and as Chairman of the Federal Power Board of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, where he was responsible for the construction of the Kariba Hydroelectric project on the Zambezi. Knighted in 1960, he retired from the Territorial Army on 1 February 1961, with the honorary rank of Brigadier, and subsequently served as the first Chairman on the Committee for the New Towns, 1961-64, as well as holding various other directorships, including B. And the British Oxygen Company. He died on 28 July 1980. Named to Duncan Law Anderson, Esq.
