New Zealand mustered a body of 240,000 service personnel: 140,00 of whom served Overseas whilst the remaining 100,000 represented Home Defense, something that was quite pressing since Imperial Japan occupied New Guinea and was air attacking Darwin and northern Queensland, Australia. Included are: Enamelled NZ “Son in the Service” Badge. Variations of this exist: HUSBAND, SONS. Silver Fern Collar Tab. Reverse pin in sound and intact. Reverse lugs are intact, yet there is no ” cotter pin”. RARE “V” Volunteer Pin with Silver Fern. A FINE WW2 NEW ZEALAND MEMORIAL CROSS GROUP TO AN NCO OF THE 6TH NEW ZEALAND INFANTRY BRIGADE WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION AT THE BATTLE OF SIDI REZEGH WHERE THE BRIGADE WAS OVERRUN BY TANKS OF ROMMELS 15TH PANZER DIVISION. 1939-45 STAR, AFRICA STAR, DEFENCE MEDAL, WAR. MEMORIAL CROSS IN CASE OF ISSUE 30484 CPL. Note 8 impressed in error. 30494 Corporal Arthur Vincent Hudson, son of Mrs M. Was born on the 13th October 1918. He enlisted on the 8th January 1940 and was quickly advanced to Corporal by March 1940. This probably due to prior service as a Cadet. Initially serving with the 22nd battalion New Zealand Infantry, he embarked with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force (2NZEF), 2nd Echelon on 1st May 1940. He transferred to HQ, 7th Infantry Brigade and then to HQ 6th Infantry Brigade on the 3rd January 1941, entering the Middle East Theatre on 5th Match 1941. On the 6th June 1941 he was admitted to 54 General Hospital but was released back to HQ 6th Infantry Brigade on the 11th June. During late November the 6th NZ Infantry Brigade 24th, 25th and 26th Battalions was very heavily involved in the battle of Sidi Rezegh during the attempt to relive Tobruk. By 30 November, the Brigade was surrounded and after midday the Italian Ariete Division and 15th Panzer Division began attacking with tanks and infantry. Despite the support of anti-tank guns, both 24th and 26th Battalions were overrun. The survivors, and what remained of 25th Battalion, managed to withdraw before Sidi Rezegh was overrun. Renamed; 1914-15 Star, impressed named 1685 PTE. British War & Victory Medals 1685 PTE. Gordon Dignan, from Auckland, attested for the 4th N. Contingent but was held in reserve and was actually assigned to the 5th Contingent when embarked in the S. Waimate in March 1900. He served in Rhodesia, in addition to other operations, and was invalided home in February 1901. Subsequently re-attesting in A Squadron of the 10th N. Contingent, he saw further service in South Africa in May 1902; he had earlier received his Queens South Africa Medal at Auckland during the royal visit in June 1901. Having settled at Manly, Sydney, New South Wales in the interim, Dignan attested for the Australian Imperial Force in June 1915. Assigned to the 19th Battalion, A. He was embarked for Gallipoli, where he served until being evacuated with a hernia and shock in October 1915. Having then rejoined his unit at Alexandria in March 1916, he was embarked for France but, as revealed by his service record, his hernia continued to give him problems. As a consequence, he was evacuated to England in February 1917, where he remained in hospital until July. Thereafter, as verified by official correspondence, his career took a turn for the worse, for he absented himself from a convalescence camp at Deverill. He has not much of a record in the A. And was sentenced to two years detention for having been A. From 30 November 1917 until 15 August 1918, when he surrendered himself after the war was over.
