Smart served with the 12th Battalion Royal Scots during WW1, entitlement to pair only confirmed. MIC also shows service with the ASC, however the pair is named to Royal Scots. Smart continued his service with the Highland Light Infantry TA post war and he qualified for the Efficiency Medal in 1932. Further clasps awarded in 1938 and 1942 (confirmed). Given the combination, it seems likely that Smart was deployed with the BEF to France in 1939. His Efficiency Medal is stamped to the 9th HLI. This unit was part of the lines of communications troops, so if he was deployed with them he would have been evacuated from Breast / Cherborg rather than Dunkirk.
