Hemmeons service in the US Army in North Africa, Italy, and France. James Albert Moran Hemmeon was born in 1873 in UphamNew Brunswick but gave his address in March 1916 as Wolfville N. He trainedas a medical doctor specializing in opthamology and later, ears, nose &throat. He attended Acadia University in NS and the College of Physicians &Surgeons in Baltimore (now University of Maryland) and graduated in 1896. He was Fellow of the American College of Surgeons(FACS) and practiced medicine for a time prior to the war in Seattle Wash. He joined the CAMC in March 1916 and served in Francewith No. 3 Canadian General Hospital with Lt. John McCrae and many otherfamous Canadian doctors. 3 CGH was considered one of the finest alliedmedical units of the war. Between 1915 and 1918, the hospital admitted 143,762 sickand wounded patients and performed 11,395 operations with a death rate of 1 in135. After the war, Hemmeon had an Ears Nose & Throat Clinic in NS(photos of Hemmeon in his clinic available on-line), wrote may scholarlyarticles (many available on the internet), was active in the N. S MedicalAssociation and was president of the Wolfville Curling Club. File is a photograph of Dr. Hemmeon’s Ear, Nose, and ThroatClinic and has two nurses, one doctor and a little girl. Clinic, Health CentreNumber One. While living in Seattle, had son Joseph Emerson MoranHemmeon. 1933-34 JEM served in Canadian merchant marine. WW II- Joined US Army (artillery). Defense medal indicates hewas serving prior to Pearl Harbour. Landed in North Africa (Oron) Jan. Involved in translating Italian POWs. Arrived in Naples Jan. 11/44 and manyreferences to Monte Cassino, Anzio, etc. Arrived on beach, St. Croix Sainte, Verdun, etc. Embarked USS John Dickerson Aug 15/45. Arrived Pier 16, NYC Aug. Discharged Labor Day, 45. A great, well documented family group to a prominent Canadiandoctor and his son. Undoubtedly, much more research could be done.
