The Ottoman Empire is now known as. Even at the time, allied media and troop referred to the empire by that name. It was instituted by Sultan Mehmed Reshad V on 1 March 1915 for gallantry in battle. This decoration was awarded for the duration of World War I to Ottoman and other Central Powers troops, primarily in Ottoman areas of engagement. The amount of detail, and quality of these pieces varied, depending on the price paid. More often than not, such versions were worn by independently wealthy persons, often titled or of high rank. White metal and enamelled with a German Style pin fitting. Has a very ornate pattern within the enamelled areas, and the edge is considerably more ornate than the standard versions (see photographs). The pin moves freely. A German made version (there were also Turkish made examples). This version is usually worn by those of officer rank. Those of lower rank usually wore ones with painted enamel. The star is 64.4 mm (2.54 in) wide and 61.9 mm (2.44 in) high. Cross weighs about 34.4 g (1.21 oz).
