Original HMAS Sydney-SMS Emden Medal – Royal Australian Navy – WW1. Very rare original medal issued to the crew of HMAS Sydney for the destruction of the German Raider SMS Emden at the beginning of the First World War. Medal was made by jeweller W. Kerr of Sydney from Mexican silver pesos found in the safe on board the wreck of the SMS Emden. The HMAS Sydney was escorting the 1st AIF contingent from Australia to the Middle East when it was warned of the presence of the SMS Emden and gave chase, ultimately leading to the badly damaged SMS Emden being beached on North Keeling Island.
