For sale is this First World War steel medal. Made circa 1916 for a German civilian interned by the British authorities in Douglas Camp, Isle of Man. During the First World War, the Isle of Man was used by British Government for the internment of enemy aliens. Two camps were established, at Douglas and Knockaloe, near Peel. The Douglas Camp was a requisitioned holiday camp which accommodated large numbers of internees until it closed in 1919. The reverse text on the medal is translated as’In memory of war captivity’. The medal depicts Douglas Civilian Internment Camp with a view of tents, wooden huts and a lighthouse. With a flying German flag and the arms of the Isle of Man. Measures approx 3 inches in length and weighs 35 grams. Still in its original wooden box with sliding lid decorated with fine calligraphy. The lid has a coat of arms on the top. The back of the box has text commemorating the soldier or civilian it was presented to (Please take a good look, I think the name is G or J L Gottlieb). Box measures approx 2.5 x 2.25 inches.
