ORIGINAL GERMAN THREE MEDAL IRON CROSS GROUP 1914-18. Iron Cross 2nd class in very good condition. Made of three parts consisting of a silver frame and an Iron magnetic core. Lovely overall patina to silver frame and all original black to iron core. Maker marked KO for Klein und Quenzer, Idar Oberstein. Saxe Weimar Eisenach Silver Merit Medal 1914 with swords clasp. Rare maker mark Erbe. Original ribbons mounted on a contempory pin backed bar. Miniature matching pin backed ribbon bar. The Photos speak volumes and what you see is what you get. Offered is an original 1920′s made WW1 German Iron Cross 1st Class. 42 mm wide white metal cross pattée with magnetic core, slightly vaulted, with a blackened cross pattée within a polished silver hatched border imposed, showing brass base polished through, the face with a central W (for Wilhelm), a crown above, the date 1914 below; the enamel to face showing some wear from use. The reverse plain, showing pin and hooked to rear, non marked light weight jeweller made piece. This is a classic 1920′s Weimar era made cross for First World War recipients. The Iron Cross was instituted on 10 March 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia during the War of Liberation against the Napoleonic French forces. It is awarded for bravery. In spite of its iconic image and fame, it has always been made of modest materials and issued in relatively large numbers. It was designed by the neo-classical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and reflects the cross of the Teutonic Knights in the late Middle Ages which was also the emblem of Frederick the Great. Rare Saxe Weimar, original Order of the White Falcon, Knights, 2nd Class with Swords, for military merit. Finely made of silver and enamels. Measures approximately 1 7/16 across at the widest. There is a penny in one scan to show scale. Weighs 19.9 grams on a jewelers scale. Reverse motto, Ascendimus Vigilando (Ascend by Vigilance). The green enamel is entirely intact on both sides. The white enamel on the falcon is intact except on the three spaces just near the body where it has hairlines and is mission a couple of tiny chips (visible under a jewelers loupe). The blue enamel on the reverse (with the motto) is missing chunk between the last two words (visible to the naked eye). Small piece of original ribbon. An attractive and rare piece and priced accordingly with the minor flaws in mind. Established on August 2, 1732 by Duke Ernest August of Saxony-Weimar ad renewed on October 18, 1815 by Grand Duke Charles August. This was primarily a house order but was also awarded to foreign heads of state and to Saxons for outstanding civil and military merit.
