WW2 OBE MiD Medal Group to Australian Lt Col Surgeon. Rare medal group to Australian Medical Officer and Lieutenant-Colonel who ultimately commanded the 2/11. Field Ambulance in New Guinea. Medals comprise Officer of the Order of the British Empire, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star with 8. Army clasp, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal with Mentioned in Despatches leaf and Australia Service Medal. All medals correctly impressed NX87 P. Tomlinson (except OBE, unnamed as issued). Medals are mounted court style for wearing. Paul Angus Tomlinson was an early enlistee to the 2. AIF on 24 October 1939 and was allotted the very low Army Number of NX87!! He was a 26 year old Medical Practitioner (a Surgeon) and single at the time, living in Epping NSW. He was on continuous War Time service from 1 November 1939 to 20 November 1945. Initially appointed a Captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps, he embarked for the UK on 10 January 1940 before being sent to the Middle East the following month. He spent time attached as a Medical Officer to the Australian Artillery and also the 2/4. For his work in Greece and the Middle East he was Mentioned in Despatches on 30 December 1941. Whilst still in the Middle East before being sent to Greece, he was photographed by the famous Australian wartime photographer and film maker Damien Parer! The photo is available on the AWM website and the caption reads (copy of the photo is attached). MCINTYRE OF THE 2/4TH, READ THE GOOD NEWS OF A VICTORY FOR THE BRITISH. He was thereafter appointed Major in January 1942. He continued to serve in the Middle East attached to the 2/4. Battalion before moving to the 7. In November 1942 he was appointed to the 2/8. In July 1943 he began service in the Pacific Islands with himself becoming sick on a number of occasions with Dengue Fever etc whilst serving with the 2/8. A copy of the citation for his award is attached showing his brilliant work caring for the wounded during this time despite the terrible conditions, constant enemy bombing and combat occurring around him. On 1 December 1943 he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and placed in command of the 2/11. Medals come with a copy of the full service file from the National Archives and official copies of the OBE citation. A rare and stunning group of fully researched medals, to a brave and committed Australian senior officer soldier/surgeon. On commissioning, Gentian moved to Scapa Flow in the Orkneys, as one of the minesweepers attached to the Grand Fleet. On 30 May 1916, Gentian was 40 miles East of the Pentland Skerries when she was missed by a torpedo, which was probably launched by the German submarine U43, waiting to attack ships of the Grand Fleet, which fired a torpedo against several sloops in this region on that day. Destroyers and aircraft were ordered out from Scapa to hunt U-43, but although a submarine was sighted, U-43 escaped unharmed. By July 1916, the Grand Fleet’s minesweepers had been split into three Flotillas, with Gentian joining the 2nd Fleetsweeping Flotilla. Gentian was still part of the 2nd Minesweeper Flotilla attached to the Grand Fleet at the end of the war on 11 November 1918, but by December that year had transferred to the 1st Minesweeping Flotilla, still supporting the Grand Fleet. Gentian was listed as still a member of the 1st Flotilla, but paid off, in March 1919, and in May 1919, she was listed as in reserve at the Firth of Forth with a nucleus crew. For Sale is a large grouping of WW2 items, including medals, patches, insignia and surgeon tools from a British Captain by the name of L. Kelly, who was a surgeon with the India Medical Service I. And Royal Army Medical Corps R. Items include marked surgeon tools, including scissors, scalpels and forceps. Tools have several manufacturers names, including Weiss, Down Bros. Virtually all are British military Broad Arrow stamped. Kelly, with a handwritten note. Also comes with multiple pages of documents, which appear to be initial orders and promotional papers, along with a pay scale document for oversea service. The medals include the M. (military division) medal, along with the 1939 – 1945 Star, the Burma Star, the India Service Medal and the 1939 – 1945 War Medal. For disclosure – when I originally acquired the grouping, the M. They have not been researched properly by us simply due to circumstances. Details that I have to hand are that he is listed as a MID December 30th 1918 for France. He is listed as a Surgeon from Edinburgh University. Shown as French Red Cross “FRC” and RAMC. Medals are named correctly. Lieut R Crothers RAMC. Starting price is well below what we originally paid. Worthy of further research especially with the service with the FRC. Hopefully they will go to a good home. Been told he was also a Captain of the 30th Motor Ambulance Convoy? Certainly a brave Officer in the thick of it in France. The item “WW1 Captains 1914/15 medal trio Surgeon RAMC, and FRC. MID 1918 for France” is in sale since Sunday, May 13, 2018.
