7th (Service) Battalion Suffolk Regiment Formed at Bury St Edmunds in August 1914 as part of K1 and came under command of 35th Brigade in 12th (Eastern) Division. 30 May 1915 : landed at Boulogne. 19 May 1918: reduced to cadre strength. 24 May 1918: transferred to 39th Division. More than 400 men transferred to 1/1st Cambridgeshire Regiment. 16 August 1918: transferred to 197th Brigade in 66th (2nd East Lancashire) Division. Gostling served in France from 30 May 1915 with 7th Suffolk Regt and was decorated with the M. For devotion to duty (London Gazette 1 January 1918 refers) besides earning a’mention’ whilst an Acting Transport Sergeant with the Machine Gun Corps (London Gazette 25 May 1917 refers). British Tank 1917 In 1918 the were transported by buses to the old battle grounds of the Somme and engaged in more heavy fighting. They were greatly reduced in strength and transferred to reinforce other units, the fought during 100 days offensive at the second battle of Cambrai, battle of Selle and advanced through La Cateau until Armistice November 1918. WW2 medal group issued to. J106851 J W F Caban AB HMS Drake. Served on HMS Heartease and Orlando in WW2. Deprived of 1 good conduct badge in 1942 for being absent from duty at sea. Jack William Freeman Caban was born in Brandon, Suffolk on 28 Nov 1906. He enlisted as a Devonport man on 28 November 1924. Awarded the LSGC in 1940 he was still serving in early 1947. Jack’s death was registered in Derby in the last quarter of 1984. He married Lilian Henshaw in Ilkeston Derbyshire in 1966. Group nicely mounted as worn. In 1939 he lived at 91 Ipswich Road Cottage Gipping, Suffolk He married Gwendoline D V Ball in 1955 in the Gipping Registration District He died on 3rd April 2005 at the age of 79 at 7 Dowes Hill Beccles death registered in Waveney Registration District in Suffolk and is buried in Great Yarmouth.
