Offered is a Great War 1916 Western Front Distinguished Conduct Medal & Military Medal group of five awarded to Sergeant G. Stewart, Royal Field Artillery. Sergeant Stewart earned his D. For the 1916 Somme Offensive whilst serving with’D’ Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Court mounted for display medal bar includes the following impressed named medals: Distinguished Conduct Medal, G. 1914-15 Star L-22614 SJT: G. ; British War and Victory Medals L-22614 A-W. London Gazette 26 January 1917: For conspicuous gallantry in action. He displayed great courage and initiative in leading several wagons to a place of safety under heavy fire, undoubtedly saving many casualties. On another occasion he rendered valuable assistance in rescuing three buried men. London Gazette 5 November 1917 (this gazette date contains mostly Ypres campaign awards). George Stewart was born in February 1895 and attested for the Royal Field Artillery at Deptford, London, on 20 April 1915. Advanced Sergeant on 28 August 1915, he served with 156th Brigade during the Great War on the Western Front from 12 December 1915, and was awarded both the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal, the former most likely for gallantry during the Battle of the Somme.
