During WW1, the Essex Regiment provided 30 infantry battalions to the British Army. The four Essex battalions saw some hard fighting, but lost even more men to sickness. They were withdrawn to Egypt in December before the Gallipoli Peninsula was finally abandoned. WW1 bronze death plaque in memory of. In its original cardboard box of issue, with his 1914-15 STAR; BRITISH WAR MEDAL and VICTORY MEDAL, named as issued to. Comes with a good copy of the King’s Letter of Condolence that would have accompanied the plaque, and a copy of his medal index card. In superb uncleaned condition. John was born at Salford, Lancashire in 1897. In 1911 he was living at 46 Elton Street, Lower Broughton, Salford, and he was an’errand boy’. He enlisted at Manchester and served in the 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. He entered France on 17 May 1915. During the Battle of the Somme John was KILLED IN ACTION aged 19 – DEATH PRESUMED ON OR SINCE 20 JUL 1916. His body must have been lost on the battlefield as he has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme – 72337 missing soldiers are named on the Memorial. WW1 plaque to 24/232 Private John Padden. John enlisted on November 6th 1914 and lived in Sandgate, Newcastle. He served with 24th (1st Tyneside Irish) Batallion, Northumberland Fusiliers. 103rd Brigade / 34th Division. He died, age 19, on the first day of the Somme, 1st July 1916. He was killed during an attack on German positions south of La Boiselle. He is named on the Thiepval Memorial. Plaque is in nice, unpolished condition. For sale is a pair of medals named to 2. John Reginald hall was killed in action on. 10 July 1916 at the Somme. He was serving in the 15th battalion of the Welsh regiment. I found the following tribute on the internet some years ago viz : Hall, John Reginald, second lieutenant, John was the youngest son of captain and mrs Edward hall of 17 , Richmond road, Cardiff. He was educated at the cathedral school, Llandaff, and at Felsted and was subsequently in the employment of messrs T. John enlisted in the Monmouthshire regiment in September 1914, rising to the rank of sergeant before obtaining his commission in the 20th Welsh in August 1915. He was posted to the 15th Welsh on 7 June 1916, joining the battalion at Heilly in the Somme Valley. John was killed during the terrible fighting within Mametz Wood on 10 July 1916 aged just nineteen and, as happened with so many of his fellow Welshmen that day, John has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. His medals, the British war and victory were claimed by his father at the above address. First World War 1st Day of the Somme Casualty Death Plaque for 4304 Private Henry Edward Hunt, Late 2nd Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). Killed in Action on the 1st July 1916. Remembered with honour Gommecourt Cemetery. This plaque has been cross referenced with the award roll showing this to be correct Henry Edward Hunt for the 2nd London Regiment. Medal roll extract included. The round bronze Memorial Plaque is 120mm in diameter. It shows Britannia and a lion on the front and bears the inscription: “He died for freedom and honour”. The full name of the dead soldier is engraved on the right hand side of the plaque. No rank, unit or decorations are shown, befitting the equality of the sacrifice made by all casualties.
