The superb Great War Battle of Arras 24th April 1917 Trench Raid Bangalore Torpedo Detachment mans Military Medal group awarded to Sapper S. Kemp, Royal Engineers, who as a member of the 519th London Field Company Bangalore Torpedo detachment which accompanied a trench raid made on 24th April 1917, and showed an utter disregard for his personal safety, when he went forward under a heavy fire to relight a Bangalore torpedo which had failed to explode, and which was needed to be blown for the third belt of barbed wire to be breached in order to allow the trench raiders to access the enemy trenches. This they duly did, all as a result of Kemps gallantry in having gone forward to relight the fuse over a distance of 15 yards under hot fire and close range. Group of 4: Military Medal, GVR bust; 556195 SAPR S. ; British War Medal and Victory Medal; 2826 SPR. Mounted swing style as worn. Condition: Good Very Fine. Together with the recipients tunic medal ribbon bar for the same. Rare Military Medalists League enamelled lapel badge. GVIR wire bullion sleeve patch. And two facsimile recommendations for his award of the Military Medal. Sidney James Kemp came from northwest London and saw service during the Great War as a Sapper No. 556195 with the Royal Engineers, and as a member of the 519th London Field Company was present out on the Western Front when he won the Military Medal for bravery in the field in the London Gazette for 12th December 1917, the award having been earned on 24th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras, and originally recorded in the 60th Divisional Engineers Routine Orders of 14th September 1917, it being for his work when with a detachment of men operating the Bangalore torpedo during a trench raid. The original recommendation reads as follows: No. 556195 Sapper Sidney James Kemp, 519 (London) Field Company. This man formed one of the RE party which took part in a trench raid on the 24th April 1917, and accompanied the centre infantry detachment in charge of the Bangalore torpedoes. When this detachment advanced, it was found that the third belt of wire had not been cut. This man accordingly came up with a Bangalore torpedo party and assisted in laying the torpedo against the enemys wire under a hot fire at close range. At the first attempt it failed to explode and consequently this man who had gone back some 15 yards again came forward and lighted the fuse thereby causing the torpedo to explode and destroy the wire, thus enabling the detachment to enter the enemys trenches. This man showed an utter disregard for his personal safety, and acted with great courage and determination. Kemp, who became a member of the Military Medallists League, appears to gone on to see service during the Second World War in Civil Defence work. Superb fully researched Air Crew Europe Medal Group to a 76 Squadron Halifax pilot who was shot down and taken prisoner on the Nuremberg Raid of 30/3/1944. Medals are original issue and rarely for WW2 medals were engraved by the pilot. In addition to the medals there are several pages of research and a copy of Martin Middlebrook’s book on the Nuremberg Raid in which the pilot is mentioned several times. F/Lt Henry “Roger” Coverley was a pilot with 76 Squadron flying Handley Page Halifax III aircraft. He even had his own plane with his personal nose art (see photo, note: this photo is not included in the group, it is scanned from a book). Flying Halifax LK795 MP-P on the infamous Nuremberg Raid the aircraft was shot down by a Me110 and crashed near the town of Hamm. All the crew survived apart from Sgt Mott who was killed, despite attempts to evade capture they were all taken prisoner. Coverley was a POW at Stalag Luft 1. He survived the war and was awarded the Air Crew Europe Star along with the standard WW2 service medals. Interestingly, and rare for WW2 medals, he had them all engraved with his rank and name and service number. The engravings are correct for the period. Later he was featured in several Bomber Command books such as Middlebrook’s Nuremberg Raid, Nichol’s The Red Line and Simpson’s excellent Ops, Victory at all Costs. With his contributions and being named in so many key books they all add to the research value of his service and medals. Please see photos for details, medals are in good order, not cleaned. ACE is of course 100% genuine as can be seen. A really nice and rarer ACE grouping. This medal was awarded to members of the Imperial and Canadian forces who, between 1866 and 1870, took part in the suppression of raids by the Fenian Brotherhood, and Irish Republican organization based in the US, and Riel’s First Rebellion of 1870, the latter being generally referred to as the red River Expedition. These unsuccessful raids, conducted on British outposts in Canada, were attempts to pressure Britain to abandon it’s battle with Ireland. The piece is beautiful. With a lovely silver patina, the piece has a swivel feature at the top of the medal, to be able to spin it 360 degrees, to show whichever side you’d like. The original ribbon is in excellent condition, as is the medal itself, as this piece has been kept in a sleeve and case for the last 50-some-odd years (my grandfather’s time owning it). As always, any questions or queries will be promptly addressed and any requests will be taken care of by day’s end. We’re always happy to just chat about history! Here is a most unusual RN WW1 WW2 Casualty Medal Grouping being a WW1 15 Star Trio named to R. Comben (Leading Seaman on Star) & PO on BWM & Victory. CPO Richard Edward Comben was born in 1890 and joined the Navy as a Boy II in 1913 where he served on board HMS Impregnable, then on a number of other ships including HMS Terrible, Jupiter, Swiftsure and Euryalus etc. He then appears on King George V, Excellence, Gossamer and Circe including shore bases like HMS Victory. Vernon and Dido etc. Most of the above are WW1 postings up until 1919. He then appears to leave the Service but rejoins and is promoted in 1926, to (CPO,). Then in 1939 on HMS Victory in Portsmouth before joining HMS Vernon. The latter being a shore base which was responsible for Mine disposal and which specialisied in counter measures on German Mines & Torpedo’s. On April 8th 1941 the sirens sounded and most of the personnel went into the shelters at 21.45 hrs. The Luftwaffe had deployed a major raid on Coventry that night but a subsidery force was sent to bomb Portsmouth. Between 21.45 hours and 0245 hours enemy aircraft of Luftflottie 3, mainly made up of HE111′s dropped 40 tons of H. E and 12.536 Incendiaries on the Portsmouth area. A number of direct hits left much of HMS Vernon in ruins. Over 100 RN and civilian personnel were killed including CPO Richard Comben. He was laid to rest in the Military section of Portsmouth Highland Road Cemetery. The Gruppenkmdr of 1/KG55, Hptm Otto Bodemayer was piloting one of the six enemy aircraft shot down in this and the Coventry raid with his Bomber crashing in Leicestershire. He survived to become a POW. After the raid HMS Vernon was moved to quieter areas with parts relocating at Roedean School in Brighton. The group consists of his WW1 1915 Trio together with a 1939 War Medal contained in an original period tin. This was his only WW2 entitlement and he was not entitled to a Defence medal having not served a straight 3 years at home. His sporadic service also presumably denied him of a LSGG medal. There is also a small diary and various original photos inc an Xmas party at HMS Vernon in 1940 plus one of King George VI etc. The group also comes with some of his PRO papers which state DD (Date off Death) 8th April 1941, “Vernon”, by ENEMY ACTION. Military personnel who served throughout WW1 and died during WW2 as a result of enemy action are rare.
