Offered is a WW2 Royal Australian Air Force medal group, as awarded to Sergeant Albert William Omond, who was taken prisoner by the Japanese and worked on the notorious Thai Burma Railway. Medal group includes the following, swing mounted as worn: 1939-45 Star, The Pacific Star, War Medal & Australian Service Medal 1939-45. All are named in impressed capitals to: 16273 A. Omond came from Norseman, was born in 1915 and enlisted 24th April 1940. He trained as an Aircraft fitter, worked at Pearce and was taken prisoner at Palembang, Java in 1942. He would have been captured, along with most of 1st Squadron, who were decimated as a result of captured, wounded and killed as a result of the Japanese invasion of Java. He served in P. Work camps – Moulmein & Camp Thai and was liberated in Thailand in 1945. Brought back to Perth in October 1945. He was discharged on the 30th April 1946. His service record can be viewed. SEE OUR STORE FOR MORE ITEMS OF INTEREST SCARCE AUSTRALIAN WORLD WAR 2 FIGHTER PILOT MEDAL GROUP WHO WAS MIA IN 1944 OVER NEW GUINEA WITH 75 SQUADRON ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE 1939-45 Star officially impressed: 434252 R. Hay; Pacific Star officially impressed: 434252 R. Hay; British War Medal, 1939-45 officially impressed: 434252 R. Hay; Australia Service Medal officially impressed: 434252 R. Flight Sergeant Roy Neville Hay enlisted in Queensland on November 6, 1942. After pilot training he was posted to 75 Squadron , Royal Australian Air Force based in New Guinea. 75 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force was equipped with Kittyhawk Fighter Planes in 1942 and used this aircraft for the duration of the war. The squadron saw extensive service in New Guinea including the Battle of Port Moresby and Battle of Milne Bay. On July 19, 1944 Flight Sergeant Roy Neville Hay and Warrant Officer Gregory Carlisle Mogg flying Kittyhawks of 75 Squadron left Holladia, Dutch New Guinea to fly to Biak Island. Both planes were not seen again and the pilots were posted as Missing in Action. 75 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force suffered 42 fatalities during World War 2. The awards come with official ribbon and are in Extremely Fine condition. NOTE: A family member, Beris Hay, wrote a 151 page book, “A Score of Years: A Story of One Man’s Transition From Boyhood To Manhood” that references Flight Sergeant Roy Neville Hay and his service.
