A WWII group of four to. Private Basil Worsley Poole, The Buffs, who died in June 1946 having endured years as a prisoner of war. General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine 6284765. ; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; War Medal 1939-45 unnamed as issued and mounted. Was born on 5 March 1910 at Ramsgate, Kent and enlisted in The Buffs on 17 February 1931. He served in’C’ Company, 2nd Battalion that joined the 1st Battalion in India 1937 and Palestine, being discharged on 5 July 1939. Re-joining in August 1939, Poole served in Egypt from 9 January 1941 and was taken a prisoner of war on 15 December 1941 during Operation Crusader in Libya. During the attack on the Gazala line of the 13th December The 1st Buffs as part of the 5th Indian Brigade made a flanking attack at Alem Hamza. The Buffs succeeded in their assault taking Point 204 but the rest of the Brigade was beaten off resulting in the Buffs being exposed in a narrow salient and reinforced only by a battalion of the 11th Sikhs, some field guns and 12 Valentine Tanks from the 8th RTR. Rommell considered Point 204 a key position and on the 15th The 1st Buffs bore the brunt of a full scale counter attack by 15th Panzer Regiment facing 39 Tanks and 300 lorries of Infantry and guns. Through ferocious fighting the Buffs and their reinforcements managed to knock out 15 Panzers and halt the initial attack but were eventually overrun losing over 1000 men killed or captured with only 71 and a battery of field artillery managing to escape.
