WW1 bronze death plaque in memory of. In its original cardboard box of issue, with his 1914-15 STAR; BRITISH WAR MEDAL and VICTORY MEDAL, named as issued to. Comes with a good copy of the King’s Letter of Condolence that would have accompanied the plaque, and a copy of his medal index card. In superb uncleaned condition. John was born at Salford, Lancashire in 1897. In 1911 he was living at 46 Elton Street, Lower Broughton, Salford, and he was an’errand boy’. He enlisted at Manchester and served in the 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. He entered France on 17 May 1915. During the Battle of the Somme John was KILLED IN ACTION aged 19 – DEATH PRESUMED ON OR SINCE 20 JUL 1916. His body must have been lost on the battlefield as he has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme – 72337 missing soldiers are named on the Memorial.
