The Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, the SiamBurma Railway, the ThaiBurma Railway and similar names, was a 415-kilometre railway between Ban Pong, Thailand, and Thanbyuzayat, Burma, built by the Empire of Japan using Prisoners of war in 1942 / 1943 to support its forces in the Burma campaign of World War II. This railway completed the rail link between Bangkok, Thailand, and Rangoon, Burma. Toosey was the senior British officer at Tarmakan, where the Japanese forced the prisoners to. Construct a railway bridge over the River Kwai for the Burma-Siam Railway. 300 men were packed into each bamboo hut, with an. Allocation of 18 inches of space. Toosey later recalled: Every form of cruelty that an uncivilised mind. Could invent was used on the prisoners. British and Allied POWs of the Japanese getting water ration. He then joined the Royal Fusiliers 8th Battalion as Lance Corporal 144446292, sent to Palestine during 1945-48 prior to British withdrawl, resulting in division of Palestine and Israel. When in 1950, the Communist-backed forces of the North invaded South Korea, Britain became the second largest contributor out of 21 countries that joined UN forces in its first ever armed response. Yet at the time, nobody living in the rubble of post-war Britain seemed to have any appetite for another conflict. The Royal Fusiliers (City of London) were now a single Battalion and were part of the 28th Commonwealth brigade sent to fight in Korea August 1952 to July 1953, their most famous member being actor Michael Caine aka Private Maurice Micklewhite R. Even before the conflict, Korea, previously part of the Japanese Empire which had been divided by the 38th parallel between Communist North and Pro-Western South in 1945, was desparately poor. After three years of fierce fighting between Mao Tse-Tung’s Chinese and the North against the UN forces, it had been blown to pieces. Daniels, Fleet Air Arm, later Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Navy – in which rank he was killed during the Korean War when his helicopter crashed into the sea shortly after take off, 15 December 1952. London Gazette 22 September 1942. For bravery and resolution in H. While escorting an important convoy to Malta. The original recommendation states. Selected as having consistently shown keenness and efficiency and moreover behaved with outstanding courage and coolness in Harpoon whilst working under fire to maintain the serviceability of fighter aircraft. Alan Philip James Daniels was born in May 1923, and in later life was a resident of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol. He served as a Leading Air Fitter with the Fleet Air Arm during the Second War. His service included with the Fleet Carrier H. Argus, and it was whilst serving with her during Operation Harpoon that he distinguished himself. The latter operation was a convoy designed to deliver six supply ships from the UK to Malta. They sailed from the UK, 5 June 1942, and passed through the Straits of Gibraltar on the night of 11 June. The six merchantmen, carrying 43,000 tons of cargo, were to be escorted to the Sicilian Narrows by the carriers Argus, and Eagle, the battleship Malaya, four cruisers and 17 destroyers. The convoy was well into the Mediterranean by 14 June, when heavy German and Italian air attacks were launched against them. As a consequence one merchantman and one destroyer were sunk. Further heavy air attacks continued until the convoy reached the narrows that night. The convoy proceeded to Malta with a reduced escort, and only two of the merchantmen made it through to Malta the following day. Daniels continued to serve after the war, and was commissioned Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, 30 April 1949. Daniels was listed as missing presumed drowned, and is commemorated on the UN Wall of Remembrance, Pusan, Korea. THANK YOU & GOOD LUCK! We list militaria and coins weekly. Fantastic grouping of various medals / badges & pictures telling the story of a young man from his Boy Scout days through his US Army Air Force tours of duty in World War II & the Korean War. Some of the medals are vintage and original to the era, others are circa late 1990′s / early 2000′s. All have been professionally arranged and framed with a few pictures included. Framer secured all items in place and none move when frame is moved around so I’m assuming some sort of adhesive was used to hold things tight. The framed portrait of him in uniform at 18 years of age is also part of this lot. Please view all pictures. Questions encouraged and welcome.
