Citation for the Military Cross was announced in the Edinburgh Gazette (Supplement) August 20th 1917, page 1681. It reads as follows. (T/Capt) William Arthur Williams. He won the MC whilst serving with the 11th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. The award is also confirmed in the Battalion War Diary written up at Reclinghem on the 27th June 1917. The War Diary, of which an extract will accompany the medals, details that the 11th Battalion took part in the Attack on Messines Wytschaete Ridge. The intense fighting saw the original strength reduced from 41 Officers and 920 Other Ranks down to 32 Officers and 718 Other Ranks.
