Group includes 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 & 1902-56 Africa General Service Medal impressed named to CAPT. Medals court mounted for display with basic research paperwork. John Gordon Laing enlisted in the British Army 11/1/1937 and served with the Royal West Surry Regiment. Most likely he served with the 2nd Battalion, as they were the only Battalion within the regiment to have served in both North Africa & Burma. The 2nd Bn were transferred to Burma and made up part of the 16th Brigade, 6th Infantry Division which was later redesignated as the 70th Infantry Division and were involved in Operation Thursday, the second Chindits campaign which aimed to transport troops behind enemy lines by air to create fortified bases with airstrips for operational use. Transferred to the Reserve 26/5/1946. He was commissioned from the ranks as a Second Lieutenant in the Kenya Regiment on 5 February 1953. The Kenya Regiment was heavily involved in the suppression of the Mau Mau uprising. We list militaria and coins weekly. We provide quality mounted medals, badges and historical research. WW2 Australian RAAF medal group. St John medals + wifes medals. This is a fantastic group to a husband and wife who had Military and St John Ambulance service. Apologies if my description of the St John medals are incorrect. I don’t have much knowledge of them. St John Ambulance Maltese Cross medal. 1939-45 star, Atlantic star with France and Germany bar, Africa star, Defence medal, British war medal and Australian service medal all correctly named in large RAAF impressing. This is his full medal entitlement at the time. Service medal of the Order of St. John with 2 bars. Last 7 medals court mounted together. Also comes with a set of early miniatures for the first 7 medals. Made by KC Luke Melb. Comes with a photocopy of his archive file and his Operational Record Book (ORB) from 3/2/43 to 29/4/43. It shows he flew as a F/Sgt with 48 Sqd out of Gibraltar and Afadir. He flew 485 hours as a pilot and 20 as a 2nd pilot. He completed 95 sorties from 26/8/42 to 14/7/43. Enlisted Melbourne, 29/3/41 aged 19. Served Middle East, Southern Rhodesia, South Africa, UK, Gibraltar, North Africa, Mediterranean and the UK. Discharged 1/7/47 as a F/Lt. An Officer of the Order of St John medal. In case of issue. St John Ambulance Maltese Cross medal (no ribbon). Defence medal, British war medal, 1977 Coronation medal, Service medal of the Order of St John medal with 4 bars. All court mounted together. All unnamed but her name is Massie. Also comes with a medal ribbon bar for the WW2 medals and service medal and a set of court mounted miniatures for the last 4 medals. See photos for a better idea of condition. World War 1 period postcards as well as letter & cover from soldier 1678 John (Jack) Harold Cockerall part of the 60th battalion when in France to his cousin in Swan Hill sent to Mernda Victoria Australia. Postcard of himself and another soldier, as him dressed in civilian clothing as a younger person in 1912 as well as St Paul’s Cathedral London, great bit of history. Jack was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (only less important than the Victoria Cross) for conspicuous gallantry at Villers-Bretonneux This is not often found like this. The following is copied from the Manitoba, Cn. Born at Toronto on 30 July 1872, son of John Young Reid, publisher of the. He was educated at Upper Canada College (Toronto) then worked as a clerk with the Toronto firm of Buntin, Reid & Company starting in 1888. He subsequently worked for twelve years as Secretary-Treasurer and Manager of the estates department with the General Trust Company. In 1907, he first served for four years as Treasurer for the Winnipeg Board of Trade. In 1911, he joined the department store of Robinson. & Company, 398-412 Main Street, as Secretary-Treasurer and eventually became Vice President. He rejoined Robinsons after the First World War and later established the investment house which bore his name. He was a Director of the Canadian General Securities Company, a member of the council of the Winnipeg Board of Trade for 31 years, and served as President of the Better Business Bureau. Reid was one of the original officers of the 79th Regiment, Cameron Highlanders of Canada. In 1916 he was the second officer to command the 179th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He sailed with them to England, and upon the reorganization of Canadas reserve the following year, he became commander of the 14th Reserve Battalion. He also commanded the 20th Brigade, and served as Honorary Colonel of the 10th Machine Gun Brigade and the 1st Battalion, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, and Honorary President of the Western Canada Military Institute during the post-war years. On 7 June 1905, he married Georgina Robinson of Winnipeg, daughter of Jerry Robinson. They had two sons: John Young Reid (b 1907) and Jerrold Reid. He was a founder of the Knowles Boys Home. A member of the Manitoba Club. Canadian Club of Winnipeg. Manitoba Jockey Club, Winnipeg Winter Club. Oakland Shooting Club, Minaki Campers Association, National Club (Toronto), Pine Ridge Golf Club. Royal Yacht Club (Toronto), United Service Club, Winnipeg Philatelic Society, Royal Colonial Institute (England), Winnipeg Garrison Club, and Badminton Club (President). He served as President of the St. (1915 to 1916, 1918 to 1920), President of the Winnipeg Burns Club. President of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. His Winnipeg home, 329 Wellington Crescent. Was designed by architect Herbert B. He died at Winnipeg. On 1 August 1945 after a weeks illness and was buried with full military honours at Elmwood Cemetery. His casket was carried on a gun carriage along River Avenue with the pipe band of the Cameron Highlanders in attendance. Thanks for taking the time to view this one.
