Operational service brought to an end through death, disability, or wound, also qualified for the award of the 1939-45 Star, irrespective of length of service. The British Burma Star was awarded to military personnel who served in Burma, China, or Malaya between December 11, 1941, and September 2, 1945. The British Defence Medal was awarded to service personnel for three years service in Great Britain. The British 1939-45 War Medal was awarded to all full time personnel of the Armed Forces serving for 28 days or more, between September 3, 1939, and September 2, 1945. British General Service Medal, 1918-62, with one clasp “Cyprus” was awarded for service in Cyprus. The medals are mounted for wear with official ribbons and are in extremely fine condition. Boer War Queens South Africa Medal to Lance Corporal Tom Lewis, who served during the Boer War and and who died of wounds at Gallipoli in August 1915. Queen’s South Africa Medal measures 36mm wide and is a circular silver medal with claw and swivel ribbon bar suspension, with SOUTH AFRICA 1902 clasp; the face with the veiled crowned head and shoulders portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, circumscribed VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX (Victoria Queen and Empress), signed G. De Saulles; attributed on the edge to 9243 L. 2ND REGT 10TH N. CONT:; on correct ribbon. The medal was instituted in 1899 to be awarded to participants in the Boer War. There is some light staining to the rear of medal. Tom Eldridge Lewis, who was born in London, England in 1879, was working as a miner at Pahiatua, Wairarapa at the time of his attestation for the 10th N. He is believed to have been embarked in the S. Norfolk in April 1902 and, as a Lance-Corporal in F Squadron, 2nd Regiment, saw brief service before the end of hostilities. In August 1914, Lewis attested for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and was drafted as a Private to No. 12 (Nelson) Company of the Canterbury Regiment.
