GREAT BRITAIN – WW2. A Scarce, Original DOCUMENTED WW2′ROYAL AIR FORCE METHODIST CHAPLAIN’ Group to The REVEREND SQUADRON LEADER Sidney Austen EDDY, who served with the R. F from 1942 until 1955, serving in EGYPT, the WESTERN DESERT, the MIDDLE EAST & United Kingdom. 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. ALL Unnamed as awarded. These are his full entitlement. These are accompanied with the following Original Documents. A The LETTER dated 18th June 1940 confirming the date, time & location for his Ordination Service. B The Methodist Conference ORDINATION SEATING PLAN which names & places Sidney Eddy at the front of church nearest pulpit. F SERVICE BIBLE – typed naming inside cover to’Squadron Leader Sidney Austen Eddy’. D’AN AIRMAN TO HIS MOTHER 1940′, recording an account of a letter from an airman who was later killed on operations. This was carried by the Reverend Eddy & probably used in his sermons / talks. E The AIR MINISTRY AWARD Slip for medals. F A 1962 dated’SERVICE MOTOR POLICY’ permitting him to drive an RAF Lorry during the period 13/2/1962 – 12/2/1963. G Named LETTER & ENVELOPE regarding the estate of his sister Edith in 1968. These also come with copy entries from the London Gazette for his appointment & later service, plus his confirmation of appointment as a’Minister’ (from Methodist Church records). Sidney Austen Eddy was born at Cape Town, South Africa on 26/2/1910. He was appointed as an ordained Methodist Minister at the Methodist Church, Oxford Place, Doncaster at 7pm on Thursday, 18th July 1940. He served as a minister in various locations until he decided to join the R. He married Nancy Barbara Eddy nee’ Wickett. Born 1/6/1912 of Redruth, Cornwall. He was appointed as a Chaplain to the Royal Air Force on 8th September 1942, receiving Officer Service No. 128400 & unusually, he was promoted to the immediate rank of SQUADRON LEADER. He was then posted to Egypt & the Western Desert arriving in late October 1942, earning the Africa Star as well as the Defence Medal – as he was operating in an area liable to enemy air attack.. He continued to serve in the Middle East for the remainder of the war. F after the war ended. On 28/11/1946, he was permitted to extend his service by a further four years with a regular forces appointment as Chaplain to the R. On 2/3/1948, he received full’regular’ rank seniority as Squadron Leader dating back to 8/9/1942. Continuing to serve in the U. K, on 27/3/1951 his period of service on the active list was again extended to five and a half years with effect from 28/11/1946. He received a further extension of service on 17/6/1952, being extended to eight years with effect from 28/11/1946. He was later granted a final period of nine months service on the active list until 31/8/1955. He was also associated with the Hamilton-Eddy, Chartered Accounts Company of Wigmore Street, London. He retired with his wife to 9, Pednolver Terrace, St. Ives in Cornwall, living there until his death on 7/3/1987. He was cremated at Penmount Crematorium, Truro, Cornwall.
