INDIA NW FRONTIER, WWII, LS GROUP TO CAPTAIN & QM ROYAL SIGNALS, Plus Rolls etc

The WWII Medals are unnamed as issued, the India General Service and LS&GC Medal are named as follows. India General Service Medal with NW Frontier 1936-37 and 1937-39 clasps to: 2320051 CPL. GviR (1st issue) Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to: 2320051. 1939 France & Germany Star. 1939-45 British War Medal. The medals are all in gVF condition or better, WWII medals unconfirmed. Alfred Eric Marshall served in India during the NW Frontier operations with the Royal Signals as a Corporal, earning him the medal and two clasps which are both confirmed on the rolls. He then served during World War II reaching the rank of Warrant Officer Class One, then on 4 December 1950 he was awarded a Short Service Commission as a Lieutenant and Quartermaster with the Royal Signals (London Gazette). Promotion to Captain followed on 21 August 1954, then on 23 January 1959 having reached the age of retirement he ceases to belong to the Reserve of Officers (both dates London Gazette). Otherwise we have done no research at all on Mr Marshall, so a nice little project for the Signals collector. Documents included are two copies of the rolls for his India General Service Medal clasps, plus three copies of the London Gazette announcing his commission, promotion and his retirement from the Reserve of Officers. WW2 Medal Pair NY Conspicuous Service Cross & Commendation Medal Named Captain. Very nice pair of medals to a very interesting man. These medals were both awarded to Captain George R Gottschalk. The medals are the New York Conspicuous Service Cross and a very early 1950s Army Commendation medal period engraved with his name. The conspicuous service cross was not awarded until 1988 and i have a copy of the record showing this which makes this medal the accruate style medal for that period. Captain Gottschalk was a very interesting man and had a very busy life. There is still some research that needs to be done on his kilitary career but he joined in 1941 and quickly attained the rank of Captain he worked with the Army Ordnance Departnent in Washington DC and later did something with the atomic commission. He was also a renowned author/business operator/ consultant/ investor and philanthropist. Very interesting man i have attached his obiturary below. These 100% came from him. I have a few documents/ copies of the records that will be included with the medals! Please check iut my other new york medal as i have been listing parts of a large collection and will be listing more over the next week or so! George Richard Gottschalk, 97, of 151 E. British troops on patrol “In Country” – Malaya Campaign 1948-60 The Malayan Emergency was a guerrilla war fought in the Federation of Malaya from 1948 until 1960. The conflict was between Commonwealth armed forces and pro independence fighters of the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA), the military wing of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP). The war was fought over attempts by communist forces to gain independence for Malaya from the British Empire and to establish a socialist economy. The fighting spanned both the colonial period and the creation of an independent Malaya (1957). Although it was referred to as “The Emergency” by colonial authorities, the MNLA referred to it as the “Anti-British National Liberation War”. Showcase your items with Auctiva’s. El Alamein 1942 – Afrika Corps Germans in Panzer IV surrender to British Tommies. The situation in North Africa was already turbulent long before Monty and Rommel turned up. In June 1940, Benito Mussolini – after years of blustering, strutting and procrastinating – finally joined the war. With Hitler apparently winning in Europe, Mussolini thought this the perfect time to expand his existing colonies in Africa, such as Italian Libya. Unfortunately for Il Duce, the task he set in Africa was easier said than done. Just across the border of Italian Libya lay Egypt, which was effectively controlled and protected by the Allies. They jealously guarded the Suez Canal, a crucial pathway for supplies and communications to the Middle East. The Brits in Egypt boldly invaded Italian Libya first, setting into motion a tug-of-war with the Italians counter-attacking and pushing into Egypt, and the British then counter-counter-attacking with maximum force, eventually crushing the Italian 10th Army. The Germans had to be called in to bail the Italians out. He arrived in Libya to lead the newly-formed Afrika Korps against the Allies. Impulsive and aggressive, he instigated the Siege of Tobruk in 1941 – an attempt to take the fortified port city of Tobruk which lasted 241 hellish days. The Allied garrison held out in Tobruk, despite the squalid, sticky, flea-infested conditions, proudly calling themselves the’Rats of Tobruk’. The siege was finally relieved by Operation Crusader, in which Rommel’s forces were pushed back by the Eighth Army – a diverse new force which included soldiers from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and India. Monty and Rommel’s most decisive confrontation was the Second Battle of El Alamein in Egypt, which ran from October through to November of 1942. In one skirmish alone during the battle, more than 15 enemy tanks were destroyed by these guns. All in all, the Allies had a huge trump card in the form of their intact supply route, while Rommel had over-extended his supply lines and was feeling the pinch. El Alamein was an inferno, beginning with an almighty, WW1-style artillery bombardment by Monty which one soldier described as turning the entire horizon into a’fount of orange and blood-red flame, stabbing at the sky’. Out of the horror, came a victory for the Eighth Army that changed the face of the North Africa campaign. Churchill famously said,’Before Alamein, we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat’. Though Rommel retreated to battle on in Tunisia, this was the watershed moment for the Allies and a huge morale boost for the Allies. Auctiva gets you noticed!
