1916 FRANCE World War I WWI Battle of VERDUN They Shall Not Pass Medal i98171

Item: i98171 Authentic Medal of. World War I: Verdun 1916 Bronze Medal 26mm (7.63 grams) VERNIER ON NE PASSE PAS, Helmeted Marianne with sword facing right. VERDUN 21 FEVRIER 1916, Wreath around Castle turrets. Medal Notes: The Battle of Verdun stretched from Feb. 15, 1916, and was one of the most important battles of World War I – and certainly the longest. French and German armies waged war north of Verdun in northeastern France for an ultimate stalemate. When battle ended, the toll on both sides was more than 250,000 dead and 500,000 wounded. The medal was ordered Nov. 20, 1916, by the Municipal Council of Verdun, in honor of the city’s defense. The medal designer was sculptor Emile Seraphin Vernier, the prolific artist whose name appears with the 1917 date on the obverse, along with a personification of Marianne (representing the French Republic). It also shows the phrase ILS NE PASSERONT PAS (“They shall not pass”) from Gen. Robert Nivelle’s June 23, 1916, speech to his troops. Castle turrets and the date Feb. 21, 1916, appear on the reverse. The medal was originally to be awarded only to those on the Verdun Front between Feb. 2, 1916, but it was eventually extended to all those who fought anywhere in the Argonne and St. Mihiel sectors between July 31, 1914, and Nov. France, officially the French Republic (French: République française), is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called Metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. France spans 640,679 square kilometres (247,368 sq mi) and has a total population of 67 million. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic with the capital in Paris, the country’s largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. The Constitution of France establishes the state as secular and democratic, with its sovereignty derived from the people. During the Iron Age, what is now Metropolitan France was inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic people. The Gauls were conquered in 51 BC by the Roman Empire, which held Gaul until 486. The Gallo-Romans faced raids and migration from the Germanic Franks, who dominated the region for hundreds of years, eventually creating the medieval Kingdom of France. France emerged as a major European power in the Late Middle Ages, with its victory in the Hundred Years’ War (1337 to 1453) strengthening French state-building and paving the way for a future centralized absolute monarchy. During the Renaissance, France experienced a vast cultural development and established the beginning of a global colonial empire. The 16th century was dominated by religious civil wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots). France became Europe’s dominant cultural, political, and military power under Louis XIV. French philosophers played a key role in the Age of Enlightenment during the 18th century. In 1778, France became the first and the main ally of the new United States in the American Revolutionary War. In the late 18th century, the absolute monarchy was overthrown in the French Revolution. Among its legacies was the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, one of the earliest documents on human rights, which expresses the nation’s ideals to this day. France became one of modern history’s earliest republics until Napoleon took power and launched the First French Empire in 1804. Fighting against a complex set of coalitions during the Napoleonic Wars, he dominated European affairs for over a decade and had a long-lasting impact on Western culture. Following the collapse of the Empire, France endured a tumultuous succession of governments: the monarchy was restored, it was replaced in 1830 by a constitutional monarchy, then briefly by a Second Republic, and then by a Second Empire, until a more lasting French Third Republic was established in 1870. By the 1905 law, France adopted a strict form of secularism, called laïcité, which has become an important federative principle in the modern French society. France reached its territorial height during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when it ultimately possessed the second-largest colonial empire in the world. In World War I, France was one of the main winners as part of the Triple Entente alliance fighting against the Central Powers. France was also one of the Allied Powers in World War II, but came under occupation by the Axis Powers in 1940. Following liberation in 1944, a Fourth Republic was established and later dissolved in the course of the Algerian War. The Fifth Republic, led by Charles de Gaulle, was formed in 1958 and remains to this day. Following World War II, most of the empire became decolonized. Throughout its long history, France has been a leading global center of culture, making significant contributions to art, science, and philosophy. It hosts Europe’s third-largest number of cultural UNESCO World Heritage Sites (after Italy and Spain) and receives around 83 million foreign tourists annually, the most of any country in the world. France remains a great power with significant cultural, economic, military, and political influence. It is a developed country with the world’s sixth-largest economy by nominal GDP and eight-largest by purchasing power parity. According to Credit Suisse, France is the fourth wealthiest nation in the world in terms of aggregate household wealth. It also possesses the world’s second-largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ), covering 11,035,000 square kilometres (4,261,000 sq mi). French citizens enjoy a high standard of living, and the country performs well in international rankings of education, health care, life expectancy, civil liberties, and human development. France is a founding member of the United Nations, where it serves as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. It is a member of the Group of 7, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and La Francophonie. A FINE’WESTERN FRONT’ AUSTRALIAN FIELD AMBULANCE M. GROUP FOR GALLANTRY IN TREATING WOUNDED UNDER HEAVY FIRE. HAVING SERVED WITH THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY MEDICAL CORPS PRE WAR, HE WAS LATER WOUNDED IN ACTION DURING THE. MILITARY MEDAL, G. V. R. , BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS’13972 PTE. London Gazette 7 October 1918. The original Recommendation, dated 24 May 1918, states. The 5th Australian Divisional Main Dressing Station in Daours, east of Amiens, on the morning of 20 May 1918 was under bombardment with shells of large calibre, and sustained a direct hit. His coolness was well exemplified by the way in which he anticipated the needs of the surgeons. The Dressing Station sustained a second direct hit, which demolished the Operating Theatre just as the operation was completed. Private Sturrock assisted to remove the patient to a cellar nearby where the wound was cleaned and dressed and the patient successfully evacuated. Whilst this was being done the soldier was indefatigable in going backwards and forwards between the Dressing Station and cellar under heavy shell fire to obtain dressings for his patient and two other patients who were under treatment in the theatre. The conduct of Private Sturrock under these trying circumstances was an inspiring example to all and doubtless saved many lives. John Sturrock, a 28 year old Clerk from. Attested for the Australian Imperial Force on 16 July 1915. Noting on enlistment under previous service; Junior Cadets, 5th Infantry, 6 Months and Australian Army Medical Corps, 6 years. Originally listed under Special Army Medical; Corps Reinforcements, he embarked from. On 1 April 1916 and was taken on strength with 14th Australian Field Ambulance at Tel-El-Kebir on 12 May 1916. On 19 June, he landed at. On 26 June 1916. Sturruck was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on 20 May 1918 when the operating theatre he was working in came under heavy shell fire before receiving a direct hit. Despite this, Sturrock stuck to his job in assisting the surgeons M. Citation and War Diary refers. Sturrock was wounded in action (Gunshot Wound in back), on 12 August 1918 but remained on duty, however on 28 September, he was admitted to hospital in. And was transferred to. Just over a week later. On 24 December 1918, being discharged from the Army on 28 March 1919. It is not clear where exactly where he was when wounded but the War Diary notes much about organising casualty clearing, bearers, forward posts etc relating to the 5th Australian Division, who were taking part in the battle of Amiens. Sturrock was wounded on the final day of this battle, so was presumably one of the forward bearers. Along with the research are copies of the War Diaries for May and August 1918. Theses are most interesting, especially as in the Appendix for May 1918, there are maps and aerial photographs of the exact position of 14th FA were on this date (at Daours), showing trench lines, shell holes etc. Not entitled to the 1915/15 Star. WW2 Royal Navy Long Service Group of Five Medals, Battle for Malta where he served at the HMS St. Malta and the Gunnery emplacements at HMS St. Angelo (a castle guarding the deep water harbour vital to the Allies) was one of the heaviest bombed places by the Nazi war machine, desperate to capture the island, and if not bomb it into dust as it was key to the North African Battles and the attacks the allies made on Italy. Please note two-thirds of the Royal Navy Personal serving at HMS St. Angelo during WW2 were killed in action by the bombing, so GHA Lee is a very lucky and very brave man who stayed in the Navy after the War. This Group of five comprises. All unnamed as issued and a King George VI R. Long Service and Good Conduct Medal named to M. Lee SCPO HMS St Angelo. These are mounted as worn with accompanying miniatures and miniature ribbon bar. After service in the Second World War Gordon Lee established a successful career in the Royal Navy, a temporarily Commissioned Stores Officer from 26th May 1945. He ended his career with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He is the only person to have survived the battle of Malta and gone from non commissioned to higher commissioned Royal Navy Officer, a unique person with an incredible story to tell. Is a bastioned fort in Malta, located at the centre of the Grand Harbour. It was originally built in the medieval period as a castle, and then was rebuilt by the Order of Saint John as a bastioned fort called Fort Saint Angelo between the 1530s and the 1560s. It is best known for its role as the Order’s headquarters during the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. A major reconstruction to designs of fort took place in the 1690s, giving the fort its current appearance, the fort was eventually garrisoned by the British from 1800 to 1979, at times being classified as a stone frigate known as. The fort suffered considerable damage during World War II, but it was later restored. It was fitted during WW2 with the. Often referred to simply as the. It was one of the most popular medium-weight anti-aircraft systems during World War 2 used by most of the western Allies and the only real defence against the bombing of Malta. Mr Lee would have commanded such a gun with a crew during bombing raids which happened several times a day at its height. See images for pictures of the gun and of Malta during WW2. The pictures do not do it justice at all, but are important to show the condition. Please be patient, we promise to get your item to you as soon as humanly possible.
